Any tips? Getting my baby pregnant...
 

I have a yorkie - Kiki- that is almost 2 this coming January and she weights about 5 lbs. This coming "time" will be her third time in heat, is it a good time to let her have babies ? When finding a stud, what is the most important thing I need to be aware of?
I took her to the vet before and the doctor said she's healthy to have babies..but I want to know what is the hardest thing, and what kind of commitment do I need...so I can be prepare for it and arrange my time....

You need a commitment of 200%.

lets start with why do you want to breed your gal? what is your goal? do you plan tp keep a puppy to love or show? are you breeding just to breed?

how much money do you have set aside for problems with a gestation and the pegnancy. Ask your vet how much a ultrasound and x-rays cost. ask your vet how much a c-section costs. Take the total of his estimate and multiply it by 4 times that is what you are looking at for an emeregeny c-section if you would have to go to the emeergency animal clinic during the middle of the night or on a weekend if your vet is not available. Could be as much as $2000.00. Do you have that set aside-

ok lets talk puppies- need to go to the vet at three days and have tails docked and dewclaws removed. Puppies will need to start being wormed and vaccinated at 6-8 weeks of age every 2-3 weeks of age. If you use your vet count on $100.00 at least for a litter of three. Hope that you have healthy puppies that do not have any ear mites or any other health problems cause the bill just went up again.

Opps what about mom- hope that she has no other health issues casue you need more money.


ok -done with money for now. It is not unusual to have a puppy that needs supplemental feedings. are you prepared to feed a puppy every 1-2 hours by a nursing bottle for several weeks. If you don't the puppy will die. Good bye
sleep, good bye working outside the home, goodbye just about everything.
Just think if you would have to feed an entire litter this way.

wow breeding is so much fun and glamerous.

you need to sit down and look at your gal. Compare her to the standard set down for the breed. How does she compare. If she is lacking in many of the qaulities that make this breed you may wish to reconsider breeding her. ok so you want to breed any way. Get a pedigree look at it. Find others who may have your bloodline so that you can ask questions. Make a list of the things that your gal is lacking ( these are her faults according to the standard) be critical be honnest. Look for a male who does not have the same faults as your gal- but who is of nice qaulity himself. It may take months to find the right guy.

I just breed one of my gals' took me over 6 months to find what I was looking for in a sire for the puppies.

Thanks for the advise Kathy,and everyone else... I am planning on keeping all the puppies, maybe one for my sister...becuase I am pretty sure I can never let those little babies go.!! ;)
I am looking for a stud around my area or anywhere in Texas but so far I just have a few that I contacted but nothing is set up yet. Kiki should be in heat sometime this month or begining of December...so I don't really have alot of time...
I am just very afraid cause I have never seen or tried this before ...and I am so scare that I will lose my baby...
She is a show dog quality , so I am trying to get a stud that is at least same quality. There are 2 vets are we go to alot so they all know her and the doctor knows how she is and how her conditions are.
I have set aside about 3 or 4 thousand just incase money for her, if we don't use it, it's fine, but if we do need emergencys, we'll have enough...
But I am still nervous and still trying to decide if I should let her be pregnant or not...
