New Mom Won't Eat My 2 yr Chloe just had puppies, 4 of them. They are 6 days old now and are very healthy and gaining weight. Chloe however won't eat and as a result she has no milk. She would nurse the puppies 24/7 if I let her and refuses to leave them alone even when they are sleeping. This is her first litter, and I know that this is a fairly common problem. I have tried everything I can think of but she simply refuses to eat. I took her to the vet two days ago and she had an xray, blood tests and was throughly examined and she was in perfect health. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can help her? The puppies are all still gaining, but I don't want that to change, nor do I want the momma to get sick. Would appreciate any ideas! |
Congrats on your healthy puppies and Mom. Some things that I do is First I put the food in the bed with the Mother and puppies. They ususally clean it up cause they don't want it near the babies, if she won't eat it out of a bowl Put small bits on the blanket with the babies! I always tease my Mom with baby meat(Plain meat No Onions), cottage cheese, yougart or whatever they really like. I also have a WONDERFUL formula I use for Moms and babies too, PM me if you would like it. They usually go crazy for it. Vanilla Ice Cream is OK too. She is at the stage where her milk is getting balanced with the amount of puppies and her uterous is contracting and gives her some pain.If the babies are happy and gaining she has milk and the more they nurse the more she will get She should be with her babies 24/7. I usually have to pick them up and carry them out to potty Baby her and soon she will be eating again sparklingbluyorkies.com |
I've had to put a food dish in the welping box so mom would eat. |
What are you feeding her? It is essential that the momma eats about 4 good meals a day. Sometimes they have to be hand fed. Her basic diet should be a good quality puppy food. You can add to that things like boiled chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt or a good canned puppy food. It is especially important that she eat before bedtime. I give mine their last meal around 9:30 at night. Have you had her to a vet? Are you monitoring her temperature. If a female get low blood sugar or is running at temperature that will effect her appetite. Do you have a supplement like Nutri-cal available? If not then some white corn syrup and water would be okay to give to her. If the pups are gaining and not crying all the time then they are getting plenty of milk. They are probably nursing every few hours now. The mommas milk will only come down every couple of hours. Good luck with momma and her babies. |
In addition to hand feeding chix breast meat I gave mine a calorie supplement as she dropped to 4.5 pounds while nursing and was skin & bones, I was afraid I'd break her picking her up - all ribs & spine-scared me. The supplement helped and she got back to her old routine...vet warned she'd always think she needs high calories, thus now she's on a "diet"...the little piggie now weighs 6.8 pounds (not a rib to be found!!) (her "normal" weight is between 5.5-6 tops) I also gave her the whelping pudding daily for the first month - she loved it and I think it was very beneficial to her. |
