Tail Docking Help Please Nova had 3 puppies on Saturday. 2 girls and a boy. They littlest was 5 ounces. So what's horrible? I have to dock their tails. I have read the posts on here how to do it and I even found a really good video on Youtube. My problem is that when I ordered all of my whelping supplies, I neglected to order the clotisol and now I don't have it and the puppies are all at 7 ounces and above and tomorrow they will be 4 days old. My vet's office does not have it either. Can I use liquid bandage? I can readily get that. Also, we are having a blizzard so I probably wouldn't be able to get it overnight delivery. Thanks. |
Barbara see if your vet can get you Silver Nitrate sticks, this is what we use and have excellent results with. I would think liquid bandage would dry too slowly and burn. I've used it on myself and that stuff isn't fun. I've also had silver nitrate used on me and it didn't burn. |
Why dock them at all? Leave them long and proud. |

TAIL - Docked to a medium length and carried slightly hiher than the level of the back. |

If you leave the clamp on for a few minutes, they usually don't bleed, if they do its not more than a drop. You need the locking straight clamp not the curve clamp. |
You can do it with little to no bleeding but I wouldn't do it without having something there to stop bleeding. The Silver Nitrate is on the tip of a stick, you simply dab the end on the area to prevent bleeding. Our tails never have any scaring on them and look great. I worry about bacteria being trapped under a liquid bandage/glue and causing an infection. |

To the OP- yes, silver nitrate stops bleeding by causing a mild chemical "burn". It also has some antiseptic properties. |

We are in Clermont, GA which is northwest of Cumming just above Gainesville. We are getting a brother and sister and the breeder didn't dock their tails. She decided to leave them long. I have never seen a Yorkie with a long tail and was wondering if you had pictures? Do you find the tail hard to keep groomed? It is good to be back. Soon to be mama of 2 8 weeks olds. |
What length to dock? What is considered medium length when docking the new puppies tails? Is the brown mark beneath the tail any guideline? Should it be 1/3 of the length or 1/2 of the length etc? Can an experienced breeder/shower please answer? The pups are due to be docked soon and I need a guideline length. |
we leave the clamps on for a few, but use clotasol for a backup. |
have you found out how to dock the tails ? Can you let me know thank you. Enlighten60- |
