Looking for a breeder recommendation in Central/South Texas I am discouraged by the lack of reputable breeder recommendations on this forum. Lots of info on the bad ones, though, which is also helpful! I have already visited the YCTA website and spoken to the breeders in our immediate area. We even visited one in her home last week. She no longer shows dogs, but does still breed. We liked her, but she raised a red flag when she told us that we would pick our puppy at 5 weeks and take her home at 9 1/2. I thought one of the stipulations of being a YTCA recommended breeder was that Yorkie pups go home no earlier than 12 weeks. I recognize that the YTCA don't specifically endorse any breeder, but all the information I see states that the YTCA website is the best place to start looking for a breeder. Additionally, a reputable yorkietalk contributor declined to endorse several of the breeders I found thru YTCA. I am making more phone calls to breeders this week, but I am hoping you all are willing to share your experiences with breeders in the area. We are in no rush and have just started looking for a breeder, but it is discouraging. Thanks in advance for your consideration. |
I live in middle TN, but I also found it very difficult to find a reputable breeder in my area. It seems every one either did not test for genetic defects, bred for teacups, bred for parti-color, sold at 6-8 weeks, and/or sold multiple breeds. Usually several red flags each. My family ended up getting ours from a backyard breeder (my mother's decision, I was against it) and ours has several problems (floppy ears, woolly coat, luxating patella, and much bigger than the breeder said). I plan on getting another puppy next year to be mine to take with me when I move out (I'm in college) and will have to find a reputable breeder then. |

Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Code of Ethics 3) Members shall refer potential puppy purchasers to other reputable breeders and be helpful and courteous to those who request information about the breed. Donna Bird (Brooklyn) and Mary (Mardelin) are both YTCA breeders that are on YT, have you contacted either of them for referrals? I don't believe either will have puppies but should be able to direct you to another reputable breeder. I believe Rosanne Fett is a YTCA breeder in Texas, you might ask Donna or Mary about her. Or, Nancy1999 is very happy with her Joey's breeder, you might want to ask her who his breeder is, even though she (Nancy) is in AZ I think, her breeder may ship puppies (probably with an escort). Don't get too discouraged, finding a reputable breeder does take time. I waited 6 months for my boy Razz, but it has been worth every minute of the wait. Good luck!:) |
One thing I suggest when buying a puppy. Go an visit the puppy but do not buy it on the spot. Every puppy is cute. You may overlook red flags because you get puppy fever. Go home and sleep on it. Sometimes things are more clear then. |
I received a PM and in the process of helping any way I can ;) Donna |
Donna, So did I. Keeping in mind that I will not recommend a breeder YTCA or not that I do not know on personal level and know of their breeding practices. In other words recommending a breeder is a great resonsibility. |
I found several good breeders but none will sell me a pup! I will keep looking. |

:D:D:D:D No, I was just jerking your chain! We both know that one show breeder here knows we would provide a great forever home for a new pup! |
