Just wondering if this is possible?
 
I am not sure if I am posting in the right place but I will give it a try. I am a yorkie mom. My Harley is 2 yrs old. I am interested in being an assistant to a breeder just to learn more about the breed and just to spend some time with the breed. Does this ever happen? Is there such a thing? I do not want to breed yorkies myself, I just am in love with my yorkie, love the breed, have time on my hands and want to enjoy this breed even more. I live in Northwest Ga.

Try going to local shows. Maybe you'll meet someone there. Have you considered learning how to be a handler? (I think that's what they are called)

Good advise...go to shows and meet Yorkie people. Some clubs even allow non-showing/breeding pet owners to join..ours does..we have a ball.

Yes, I agree - you should go to some shows. We have one coming up in Feb. 3 - 6th in Atlanta - Jack Onofrio Dog Shows, LLC .
I see that Dallas, GA is just northwest of Atlanta. You are close to some of the best yorkie people in the US.

There is also the Atlanta Toy Dog Club that meets monthly in Atlanta. Here is their link -http://www.greateratlantatoydogassociation.org/ Many are members here too, since there is not a yorkie club for GA.

Ok, Thank you for the advise, I will check this out. How do I find out about local shows and such??? Where do check about training to be a handler???

If you go to Jack Onofrio Dog Shows, LLC most of our local shows are listed with this superindenent. Or you could go to American Kennel Club - akc.org and check their link for events. That is also a great place to check for shows. As far as training to be a handler "for yorkies" you need to get to know some of the handlers that show in our area and see if you can be their assistant. Some have a mentor/training program - and they will teach you. If you come to the shows and talk with them, get to know them, you can ask them. Just be sure if you are interested in yorkies - you are mentored up with a yorkie handler. There is a world of diffenence to handling a yorkie, due to grooming.

Forget being a handler for the time being...you must know the breed, know breeders and most good handlers either breed or are very close to top breeders...most handlers start by showing their own dogs or dogs of their close friends and family.

Pat is right that there is a lot to learn about our breed. Talking and getting to know the people that show is your first step, so you can learn. Yorkies are one of the hardest breeds, there is so much to learn about them. The exhibitors can direct you in the right direction. The Toy club is also a good place to meet people - there are some yorkie breeders/exhibitors that go to the meetings and they do have nice yorkies, great lines, and champions themselves. It does take many years to finally become a handler. Many got into the profession when they were kids.

You don't have to breed Yorkies to join your local YTCA. That's a great place to meet people who love Yorkies just as you. :)

Georgia does not have a regional club of YTCA. The closest club thing we have for her is the Atlanta Toy Club.
Just getting out and meeting the people that do show - will be an education and working your way to learning more. Best of luck!! :D
