I have a question about the runt of a litter I have a 7 week old puppy that is the runt. He is 9.9 oz at 7 weeks. There are two other puppies from this litter that are a little more than a lb. This puppy seems to be normal other than he is very tiny. He is eating, playing, teething, barks. I recently found out that the father to the dam was only 2 1/2 pounds. The dam and sire to this puppy are both about 4 lbs. I took him to the vet at 2weeks old and they said he was just the runt and will catch up, so far that has not happened. I have an appointment next week with the vet but this is driving me crazy. I guess im worrying. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks for any help you could offer to me. |
I would certainly have test run to rule out any health issues, especially liver shunt, when he gets a bit older...make sure there isn't a medical reason that he is so small. Then again, smaller pups do happen in litters from time to time. It seems like there are lots of small dogs in his family tree, so that may be the case here. Of course, you don't want to end up producing especially small dogs, which is why it is important to know their lines well before breeding and to never breed small dogs, especially females under 5 lbs. :( |

puppies all develop at different rates- one of the biggest at birth in one of my litters slowed down at 3 weeks and i panicked like crazy- but at 2yrs old bambi is as fit as a fiddle (at 3.03lbs)... another from the next litter was the tiniest at 9 weeks then by 12 he had caught up and eventually overtook 2 others... deffinately get all appropriate tests done anyway, (Always better to be safe than sorry) but chances are with such a small grandparent and Mother, hes just a tiny :aimeeyorkbaby... |

hi Guaranteed for their health. That is what I meant. Dogs were not from a backyard breeder. I have another yorkie also and these dogs are my world. Great with everyone and make me smile everyday. I think that is why I worry so much. Thanks |

I agree with Bama....have all the necessary tests performed on this wee one. Small he is, but that could mean nothing, he maybe just a slow starter. However, if this pup doesn't make it to a minimum of 3 pounds, keep him or "place" (not sell him) in a qualified home. A home that knows how to handle tinies. If with all the proper tests performed there is a chance there is underlying medical problems and you would never want to sell heartache. |
thanks Not selling him...he is mine! I have an appointment next week and planned to have him tested just anxious and was looking for insight from those that have dealt with this before. The vet said he need to be 8 weeks to have proper testing so I'm patiently waiting. Will post pictures. I also have a 1 year old male yorkie Bear. And a 12 year old male shepherd Casper. But, you should start with a blood panel. Bile Acids at 16 weeks and 6 months. CERFs at a minimum of a year OFA at 2 years of age. You can have him x-rayed for Leggs Perthes younger as it does rear it's ugly head at about 7 months of age. |
thank you so much! I'm grateful you gave me this information because I was really worried about him getting shots at his size. The vet was sure he would catch up in size and he hasn't so I may get there and they not want to give him shots. I. Would be devastated if something happened to him so the more info I get the better I will feel. |

I am so anal with this tiny guy. I keep him away from the other pets.. I have a small playpen I keep him in.. Don't. Take him out and when I can't be home I have my mom watch him for me. I'm anal about the clean thing anyway. You are very nice and I appreciate the tips. Thanks again. |

no not at all. The dam got sick about a week after delivery and the vet said she could not nurse the puppies any more and should be kept away from the puppies. So the three puppies have been bottle fed puppy formula the entire time. The owner wanted me to have him because one went to her son and the other to her niece.... It has been a very costly and tiring time for this lady and since the puppies aren't with the dam she wanted me to start caring for the puppy. The other two puppies are huge compared to this one. This was her first litter of puppies and they were only going to family until the vet bill was huge so she new I would care for him and do what ever I can for him. The lasy who bread him has three yorkies, 2 girls and one boy, one with champion blood lines. |
i know The puppies have not been with the dam since a week after delivery because she got sick and the vet said she couldn't be with the puppies. They have been bottle fed since they were one week with puppy formula. The puppies are now 7 weeks and she wanted me to take him since its been very costly and tiring for her. They were originally meant for family members, she gave me this one because she knew I had one and would care for him the way he will need to be cared for. |
