A little late to be trying o figure this stuff out now. These are things that should have been researched way IN ADVANCE of breeding. <sigh> Yes, your female will most certainly need calcium supplements to ensure that she does not suffer from eclampsia. Talk with your vet (or mentor...you do have one of those, right?) regarding how to best go about supplementing her. Research the signs of eclampsia so that you know what to watch for. Also, research mastitis as well. There are things you as the breeder owner can do to help prevent issues with that as well. If you feel your female is in desperate need of being cleaned, then do it. Only wash her bottom half. Use warm water and a mild, baby shampoo. Make sure that she is completely dry and warm before putting her back with her babies. |
Calcium supplement is very dependent on how many pups your girl has had. I usually don't supplement unless a girl has had 3 or more. There is Pet Cal, however, the correct dosage should be discussed with your vet. There is a couple of recipes, posted as stickies in this forum. I suggest giving your girl a scrambled egg a day and feeding her a minimum of 4 meals a day, let her eat as much as she wants. I wash my girl's bottoms after she's whelped with a universal medicated pet shampoo and make sure that she is thoroughly rinsed and blow dried before she is put back in with the pups. A week after she's whelped is when she is more apt to leave her pups and that is when she gets a full bath with the medicated shampoo. Again make sure she is throughly rinsed, especially her breasts. When she is taken out to potty, make sure that you wipe her breasts, private area and feet before putting her back in with the pups. |
(Obviously, I am not a breeder). Why do you use medicated shampoo? Any idea what type of medical ingredient is in it? |
