Weigh Question. Help Please:) Hi Guys. I have a question for you experienced breeders. A 26 day old Yorkie who weighs not quite 4 ounces. I tried to chart her on the Yorkie Weight Chart but can't figure it out. Seems extremely tiny, just wondering if you guys could figure out what she'd be charting as an adult? I'd appreciate any input. I have my little Brooklyn who is 2.5 lbs. full grown. My first one I bought, my other's are rescues. I have my eye on this little girl and would like some input on weight. She had a fall at a couple of weeks old. Accidently dropped, and had a lump on her head which has gone down but is still somewhat present. Time will tell how she'll be and we are waiting, but at this time she seems to be doing well. She is being bottle fed as mom is not producing enough milk for her. She is a singleton. Thanks. E. |
Trying to decide if I'm reading that correctly. Very very tiny. Enough I'd be very leary of her overall health. What did she weigh at birth? She should've already doubled that and gaining ounces per DAY. She's almost 4 weeks...at 4 oz...my guess is approximately 1 pound. Those charts are infamously incorrect though... |
She is a bit of a tiny. Never had the experiece of four ounces at 4 weeks. My last litter I had a boy that weighed 2 ounces at whelp. By the end of the first week he was 7 ounces. At 16 weeks he was 2 pounds. He weighed in at 6 pounds on his first birthday. The charts usually hold true for other breeds, but yorkies????? So, many things factor in. Growth pattern of individual lines can give you an estimate. However, the only thing you can depend on in Yorkies is that they'll make a liar out of you everytime. |
Actually, I'm more concerned with the bump on her head. What has the vet said? |
OK I went back and looked at the original email. She was 3 ounces at birth. Mom was not producing enough milk and had to be fed every three hours by hand, then she had that fall, slipped out of the breeder's hands and would not nurse. They started tube feeding her, and now she is eating fine with the bottle. If you're correct, that she should have doubled then she should be about six ounces now, but is not quite four ounces. Breeder said she still has a lump on her head, but not like it was. I think vet gave her a shot to stop swelling when it happened and drained some of the fluid from the lump. She did oink or bark. I'm praying she is alright. E. |

I don't think you can even begin to estimate an adult weight for her since she has had a rocky start. She could be very behind her normal growth pattern and catch up after a few more weeks. She may always be tiny though. Just too soon to tell when she was not fed naturally from the start. I lost a momma dog and had to hand feed the whole litter. The smallest one would not suck on a bottle. I used a dropper to feed him. He stayed the tiniest for quite a while. I kept trying the bottle here and there. Finally a day came that he took it. Then he started gaining weight better. Once they started on puppy food, he ate like there was no tomorrow! :) He actually became the larger of my males before it was time for them to find homes. So, you can never tell. The prediction charts work VERY close for me once the puppy is 8-12 weeks old, but before that too many factors play on their tiny weights, especially in cases like this one. |

I line breed so, my line is pretty consistent, grow by leaps and bounds the first 3 to 4 months, to the point you think they're all going to be giants. But, they stop. Some are 3 pounds at 8 weeks. But, I a had a wee one, has everything going for her....the makings of a show dog and based on her pedigree; parents, grandparents, etc. She should have made it, she never did and I ended up petting her out at 9 months of age. Now this little girl was 5 ounces at whelp time she's 3 1/2 pounds now. Her mother was 6 pounds sire 5 1/2; both grandmothers 7 pounds and grandfathers between 6 & 7 pounds. |

I have never seen a 4 ounces puppy at 26 days old. The tiniest puppy i have seen at birth was 2.5 ounces. Usually , here or in my family or any friend's litters i have seen , by week one puppies are all double what they were born ... at 26 days, that is about 3 and a half weeks , puppies are usually eyes open and starting to walk , they respond to our voices , etc... Have you thought that puppy may have hydrocephalus ? The swelling on the head is a sign. Anyways, please keep us posted . It will be very interesting to see how this tiny one develops ! And of course we are all hoping for the better. I have one question however : How much does the parents weigh? XOXO |
This pup is almost 4 weeks old...I have had a few in the 10 oz range at that age, but they were nursing well and had a slow steady gain each week..most were born at 1 oz...I have a a few who were in the 12 to 14 oz at 8 weeks...but I always kept them until they were about 6 months and made a solid 2 pounds... IMO, a puppy that is 4 oz at 4 weeks is very unlikely to be healthy as an adult..only time will tell and the adult weight would be the least of my concerns right now. Wishing you good luck. |
The adult weight is the least of my concern. I'm not savvy on weight and age and was really only trying to get a feel on whether this was a normal weight at this age. I was excited when this little one was born as I had been waiting for just the right girl and when I was told she was accidently dropped was heartbroken not only for me but for that poor baby. Her health has and IA my concern hence my reason for posting this question. As I said I am not sure on age and weight And growth etc. And felt that she was very small even for a tiny but wanted some input. The breeder has just sent me mother note saying not to get emotionally attatched as she is not growing as she should and wont know anything until she is older. Her mom was about 5 lbs. Dad I forget. I saw mom when I got Brooklyn. Mom is a half sister to Brooke. This is another reason I was excited. I just pray for this baby. Not foe me but her. E. |

I had one that was 2.5 at 2 weeks but sadly he didn't make it. I hope the little puppy pulls through and hits a growing spurt. The bump on the head really worries me. |
