puppy that makes a strange noise in her throat
 

I have a fat, happy, energetic, healthy? female pup that is 4 weeks old and makes a clicking / thumping noise in her throat and you can see the skin in her neck/throat sort of suck in/ vibrate with the noise. She seems to make it when she is excited/happy. I have not taken her or littermates to the vet as of yet. So in the meantime I thought I would post here. I've NEVER heard or seen anything like this before. Have you? Any info / suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I would have done been at the vet. Take her asap!

GO TO THE VET ASAP, and take the puppies to be checked out! I don't get it, if you have a major concern and problem that needs vet attention immediately why ask for help here, this sounds very serious and only a vet can fix it or help, go there first please.

when i did wk exp. in the vets a yorkie was brought in with a similar sounding problem. turned out she had excess tissue growing in her trachea and had to have an op because it was very serious (like your little one sounds)... it isnt always a major problem, many live happy healthy lives with the condiction without surgery, but if it is serious and an op is nessesary but not done, it is fatal (and when having an episode, feels kinda like having an extremly bad asthma attack in a young child)
if this is what is wrong, each time she does this she is suffocating a little.

how long has this been a problem for?

so, obviously a vet appointment is needed asap

One of my girls(actually snoozing in my lap now)--she started to lose weight around introduction of food time, and we noticed her spitting up food--and the weird pulsating in her neck(like a tenting look)--and the strange noise whenever she'd cry. We did barium rads-and it turned out, she had megaesoughagus. The vet I worked for at the time, was the breeder, and was on vacation-so I was caring for the pups-the relief vet felt it was best to put the puppy down bc of the complications with the condition, as well as the fact, that she wasn't even a lb--she was very happy, played well-ate her gruel I created, lol. We gave the stinker a chance and happily--she beat the odds and grew out of it :) She joined my family permanately and is doing awesome--no problems at all.

Thanks for ALL the advice! I had never heard of megaesophagus before! I checked in out on the Internet and found a great medical site. I will definitely keep my eye on her with this in mind. She is NOT making the noise anymore.:) She is in perfect health otherwise. You know how pups sigh /breathe fast/noisily when you cuddle them. Just twice in the same day she made this funny noise along with that. Sorry to alarm you all. I just thought someone here might have also heard /seen this before.

Just a foot note, I am NO FOOL;) and really care for/ look after ALL my dogs:animal36,(cats as well) and I know when it's time to take them to the vet and of course I will take her if it returns. They will all be going at 6 weeks. I will definitly ask him about this. Thanks all the same.

So you're using the internet in place of a vet??? I would still recommend taking her in, I'm sure you know of all the different types of problems this breed can run into and a diagnosis based off of the internet is not the way to go. Unless you have seen a vet I wouldn't call it good. jmo.

Why wait to 2 weeks? I don't get that. They don't get their shots until 8-9 weeks...so if taking them just for a checkup why not now?

You really had me doubting myself. So I took my sweet little Tulip to the vet today. He checked her out, listened to me about mega-esophagus, I even suggested an x-ray ( as I read on the Internet). AND~ I am GLAD to say~ He suggested we wait and see, as she has NOT been making the noise, although she had spit up a couple of times. So we can ALL rest assured I am not diagnosing my own dog or abusing my dog OR ????

I will continue to use the Internet, (A really valuable tool!) this site and others, to help me stay / keep informed, to learn new things from experienced breeders, that are sometimes more informed / knowledgeable regarding little, tiny pups and their ailments along WITH my vet!( NOT INSTEAD OF!) AND if you don't YOU could be putting to much faith in YOUR vet! They are only people not GOD! Surgery/procedures isn't always the answer to everything. Isn't sharing info what this site is ALL ABOUT!) It was NOT " a major concern or a problem that needed vet attention immediately " Give ME and others in the future, some credit! PLEASE!

I would also suggest, once someone has suggested that poster should "see the vet." That OTHERS SHOULD STOP suggesting the same, because it feels like/IS bulling in my opinion. It was almost like a angry crowd/ MOB mentality. I hope you ALL were concerned with the pups welfare and NOT something else. I'm trying to give you some credit!;)

Do you need to do anything fancy/different now?
How old is your girl now?

quiet frankly, i had no doubt that you cared for your dogs- thats why you asked for advise, right? and what else would we have posted for if it was not out of concern for the puppy?
but the fact is that if only one person was to suggest the vet and everyone else who Would have suggested the vet does not,many people then ignores that one voice and that Could cost a dog dearly... so i personally hope that we all continue with the posting method that works; giving the best advise possible, not constantly worrying Incase you offend the OP with suggesting to see a qualified professional practicioner- if i ever have any doubts, i'm straight on the phone to my vet- i'm well aware he is just human, but hes a darn good one and i'm lucky enough to have a vet that i do trust with my dogs lives!
in your first post, you made it look like she made this noise every time she got excited, so given the wording, would you not have also suggested a vet trip? i'm glad that you are using medical sites for your research, but given that there are many for whom the choice is vet trip vs. wikipeadia, so you see the point don't you?

i'm glad shes ok and hope that this problem doesn't re-occur for her, because it does sound like it would be scary for her...

I am sorry you felt bullied we only have the best interest of the puppy in heart. I will be honest it really upsets me that people come here to seek advice before they see a vet. I have seen how fast one can go down. I really didn't mean to be rude just really concerned.
