Traditional Terrier Head? I was reading on another site about UK Y.T.'s having a more traditional terrier head. Being new to the breed, I find this topic interesting. Can anyone shed more light on this for me, and pictures showing traditional vs. "not as" traditional would be even better. :p I'd appreciate it! |

Why not look on Sweetblue site...she posts pictures of Yorkies from all over the world. I think many UK Yorkies have a bit of a longer muzzle..but we do some much top knot puffing and teasing, it is hard to tell exactly how long many muzzles are on AKC Yorkies. Roberta Rothenbach had a boy named "Gator", he was not a small Yorkie..his head was not small..but it was what I called a refined Terrier head..Many Yorkies his size have a more coarse terrier look...I see tiny 3 pounders with long, sharp muzzles..some have an oversized head that does not fit the size of their body. I am not a coarse terrier look lover...but a more refined Gator type head is perfect for me... |
Shodanusmc...traditional what? That is not a terrrier head..or were you joking? |

IMO this refers to style that looks more silky like. Some like it, some don't. |

The traditional terrier head is more flat on top instead of being very rounded. Some people even advertise their yorkies as being apple-headed -- that is not traditional nor to standard. Just as the AKC standard for Yorkshire terriers says: "Small and rather flat on top, the skull not too prominent or round, the muzzle not too long, with the bite neither undershot nor overshot and teeth sound. " I also have a Jack Russell and they make a point to distinguish the traditional head as being more flat on top too: Correctheads This site even explains why. I think the "why" would be the same for the Yorkshire Terrier too, as they were both bred to be working dogs. |

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Every Yorkie is just a bit different from the other like people are. Unless you are a show breeder who needs ribbons on your wall, you should not be concerned with a great deal with looks. A healthy loving Yorkie is all that is needed to bring energy and love into your life. |

All breeders and fancier should care about the looks of a yorkie. When you loose sight of the standard you aren't taking health into consideration. We all love these little wee ones, so health this is a given. It's important to ask questions in order to understand it better. The UK standard reads the same, doesn't it? Why do they look different? Is it because they are shown in the terrier group there? Regardless of buying for pets or show, all breeders should breed for the same reason trying to get the best representation of the standard possible, "the one". Anyone that isn't breeding for looks shouldn't be breeding. We love all dogs. This breed doesn't have a boxer type round head. I feel it's common here. It may be something someone is saying to promote themselves. The standard does not read that as being correct. Not ours or theirs. |
