Bad reaction to immunization Hey, I took the babies for a vet check and immunizations today. They are 9 weeks old. Within 5 minutes of the injection, one of the babies was drooling a LOT and seemed weak. The vet took her back and gave her some benadryl and something else (forgot what the 2nd was). We waited about 30 minutes to ensure she was improving before leaving. Now, she will not be getting that brand of injection again, but I'm nervous about getting any further immunizations for her. I'm curious if this is a typical reaction? or if it could be hereditary?? is it likely to happen again to another brand? |
It depends on exactly what she was allergic to in the vaccine. It could be the actual killed viruses, the preservative (many use an antibiotic as their preservative) or even the base of the vaccine. I would be leery about getting ANY vaccinations with her at this point. |
I give my own vaccinations and have never had a reaction with a pup so, in that sense, I would say it's not typical. I use the Galaxy 5 way. What vaccines did they get? When I first started out breeding, my (then) vet gave the 7 way vaccine (which I would never do now) and no reactions with that either. Was this pup in any way 'weaker' before the shot? I have always considered taking their shots well as a positive thing but would certainly be concerned if any pup had a bad reaction. At such a young age, tests wouldn't be very accurate, but you might try feeding a high protein food to challenge the function of the liver. I have weaned pups on a 36% protein food and feel their doing well on it is an indicator of good liver function. |
What vaccine did the get? Lepto is a one that many have adverse reactions to. |

I've seen Lepto cause vaccine reactions, especially to puppies under 12 weeks old and recommend to never give it to dogs under 6-12 months. Teresa |

If you are nervous, you could ask her about pre-medicating with either benadryl or a steroid to minimize a reaction. |
how is your bay today??? thinking of you!! |
I have had two dogs that had bad rections to vaccines. My dachshund actually got bumps all over her body (doggy hives) when she was a pup. Another just acted sick after. The vet marked their charts and they always got the preshot after that. No further problems. I think it was just Benedryl or another antihistamine. But it did the trick -- no more bumps or acting sick afterwards. I do not let them give the rabies with the other shots. I think that is too much for our smll pups. I also do not give lepto. Just too many yorkies with bad reactions to it. |
