Has Anyone Heard of This Breeder? 2 Attachment(s) So I visited a girl today who is looking to rehome her yorkie puppy after only having him for a few weeks. She said that she got the puppy as an impulse buy after college graduation and realized shortly after that she didn't have the time to care for it. The puppy looked healthy as far as I could tell and was very adorable and well-cared for by her. HOWEVER, the paperwork that she showed me was minimal. She supposedly got the puppy from a Virginia breeder named Charles Boykin. She showed me a paper that said the puppy was eligible for ACA registration....I'm assuming that means he is not yet registered but I'm not really familiar with this issue. Either way, she is a nice girl and I believe everything that she said but I'm not sure I trust the breeder from whom she got the puppy. Has anyone heard of a breeder in VA named Charles Boykin? I keep telling myself that regardless of the legitimacy, this puppy needs a home so maybe I should get him rather than let him end up in a shelter or elsewhere. Is that a bad way of thinking about it??? Help please!!! Attached are some pictures of the pup. |
Cuuute puppy!!! If you have the time and the means to care for it, who cares where he came from. He needs a good home and that's what matters. He is ADORABLE. |
Awww he is so cute!! If you felt in love with him, why don't you have him checked by a vet to make sure he is healthy? How much is she asking? I just googled and could not find any reference to this breeder... Try to get more information from this girl, get the breeder phone number, call him and ask all questions you my have in regards to his health history. Look at the sticky post about what to ask/do when getting a new pup and go from there. Good luck! |
She is asking for 750 including all of his stuff (crate, beds, food, brushes, etc) I asked about the breeder and she said he was in the process of moving when she got the puppy from him and that he had already sold the parents too...definitely very sketchy stuff so I doubt I'd be able to get in contact with him. She did show me vet papers too but I only skimmed because I didn't really know what to look for. The puppy was friendly and energetic but did like to bite. She said that he's teething and that the vet said it's normal. She also said the vet told her to play more aggressively with him which I found to be a little strange. Do you think the teething thing is true? I read on here that puppies bite when they leave the litter too early right? Anyway, thanks for the advice and I will check out the sticky you mentioned. |
ACA is not a legit registry. Personally the puppy does not look purebred to me. Regardless very cute and needs a home :) |
you would just be giving a deserving baby a home. since you aren't buying directly from the breeder, you are not supporting the breeder...if they are a BYB or puppymill, the damage of buying from them is already done. now this baby just needs some love. I got Dexter in the same way |
Hmm, tough call. If she was rehoming him for free or not very much, that's one thing. But IMO, that's a bit more than I would be willing to take a chance on without knowing or being able to find anything out about the breeder or the dog's real medical background. I think if it were me, as cute as the guy is, I would really probably pass. I just don't think I would be willing to take a chance and spend 750 on a dog unless I could meet the breeder and find out more about him. |
I agree, it's a tough call. How old & big is he? It's hard because he can be registered, but not with the most reputable registry, so it makes you wonder about the breeder and without having any information on the breeder, I don't know. I would certainly want to be able to take him to the vet and have him checked out, though any health issues may take quite awhile to show up. Maybe you could ask her for more info on the breeder, kennel name, phone number. Anything that will give you more info in order to search. Good luck with your decision! |

As usual, thanks for all the advice! |
I missed the 750. That is alot. Honestly he is a very cute puppy but he does not look purebed or near the standard to me. I bought my Lola for under 200$ when she was 10 months old with all her belongings and shots. She is probably a mix but I really didn't care. I bought my Zach for less then that(750) and he is purebred standard yorkie with AKC papers and he was up to date on shots and neutered. I wouldn't pay that much for that puppy. I think it's too much and too big of a risk. |

I would run away from this situation. Some of the reasons I feel this way are due to the fact that you are not rescuing this yorkie. If you are to pay for a pet, you should have a quality example of the breed. This includes background info, AKC paper registration, a health guarantee, a well socialized good example of the breed etc. Ignore $$$. Do not allow this to be a reason to get a pet. You will regret it. Find the breeder you want, if it's too much money then wait. You should know that quality pets are not expensive. The days or rumors of quality puppies costing several of thousand dollars is not here. if you have a good home, you should be able to find a nice example of the breed. If it's a rescue situation, get one from a rescue that has done the other things they known for. She may be a con. The yorkshire may be sickly. The yorkshire may be have have social issues. The yorkshire may not be purebred. The yorkshire may be a different age. 750.00 is a whole lot of money for this registration. It's outrageous! You can buy a beautiful yorkshire terrier, one that melts your heart. You've waited this long, it's your dream. Get the right one. Don't do this without the right breeder. If you are having trouble finding one. We will help you find one. They are out there. I understand the temptation. I do. Just run fast. ;) |
Thanks so much for the advice! I'm so glad I found YT. Don't know what I would've done without you guys. Well....I probably would've ended up getting the puppy thinking I was doing a good thing. I've already started contacting some reputable breeders that I've seen on YT. And I will contact her later today to let her know that it may not be the right puppy for me. This will be my first pet so I want to do it right and not take any unnecessary risks. Thanks for helping me to realize this! |

You shouldn't have to ask. She should be offering you all of these things. Those are basic questions. Never feel guilty about anything you ask regarding a puppy. You were smart to ask! Smart to come back and get advice. Way to plan! If you wait around for more advice, I think you will feel better about the questions you asked.:thumbup::thumbup: |

This is true. You should check out everyone no matter how good it seems. |
I really think you are making a wise decision. My gut tells me that since this chick clearly didn't think through all the time and responsibilities that come with a dog, then she likely didn't think through and really research the breeder either. Also wanted to second what another member said. That there are good and bad breeders everywhere, even on YT. It's not uncommon for members/breeders here, who often have questionable ethics and come to YT ONLY to sell pups, to contact new members privately with offers of dogs for sale. Please be wary of any questionable offers you have, either from people here or elsewhere. And if in doubt, ask. :) |
The lack of information and sketchy details could also mean that she is a puppy broker. I too would say you pass. Possibly even suggest that she call a yorkie rescue to surrender the little guy. As others previously have said~be sure to check out ALL breeders whether YT or elsewhere. Good luck with your search for a new puppy. :) |
The first thing I thought of after seeing the first picture was it's a Silky or at least part Silky...but what do I know...Just my first thought. Kendra |

i'd agree with the silky theory (but o've only seen a handful in person as they arent very common over here). good luck in your search for your furbaby! |
