DCDogFinders or Greenfield Puppies?
 

Hi there, I'm new to YT and currently in the process of finding my own yorkie. I've lurked around here for a few days and am finally mustering up the courage to post. I have a question about 2 sites that I stumbled upon:

DCDogFinders.com and Greenfieldpuppies.com

The first is supposedly a group of 14 family breeders who came together to create the site and each breeder only has 1 or 2 breeds. However, they do have mixed breeds.

The second claims to be a local advertising site for reputable PA breeders.

I have a feeling that YT members may not consider the breeders on these sites to be legitimate, but I'm just a little torn because despite what I've learned on the YT forum about reputable breeders, it just sounds like these people really do care about their puppies and have a thorough screening process.

Anyway, I would appreciate any thoughts or advice on these sites. Thanks so much!

It's great that you are asking questions and looking around prior to buying a Yorkie.
Buying the breeder first is so important and can't be stressed enough!
You want to buy from a reputable, ethical breeder! Not a puppy mill, BYB or broker! It may seem cheap up front, but it will cost you in vet bills down the road. Not to mention you are lining the pockets of people who are living off the backs of their dogs!

I would suggest checking YTCA.org for reputable breeders in your area.

Personally, I wouldn't touch either site you have listed with a ten foot pole!
The first site as you mentioned breeds all kinds of mixes (which NO ethical breeder does), they let their dogs go home at 8-9 weeks and mention "teacups."

The 2nd site appears to be a broker site, run! :thumbdown:thumbdown
There are plenty of threads about Greenfield on YT if you search the name.

If you google both sites you listed you will find info on both of them being puppymills, brokers or both. That should be enough to not buy from them!

Well, my 2 cents on these sites.
DCDogfinders, the first puppies you see on their site are mixed breeds.
No reputable breeder breeds mixed breeds.

Greenfield Puppies is a "front" operation for many, many puppy mills.

I would look for a known reputable breeder, not someone who appears to be acting like brokers. Look for a breeder who only sells their own pups, and not advertising for all and sundry.
They may look to have careful screening processes, however looks can be very deceiving.

I would check the breeder section on here and the Yorkies for sale section too.

I just wanted to say to still please check out any breeders listed here on Yorkietalk as well. Don't hesitate to ask for opinions on anyone!
There are good and bad breeders everywhere, even here!
You will probably get PMs from breeders wanting to sell you puppies, please research them as well!

Before Yorkie Talk, I looked into Greenfield Puppies. I purchased my 2 girls from a breeder which happens to be a Amish friend of mine that bred yorkies.He has two babies of his own and his parents also have two so that is the parents of my Jackie and Sadie.He started selling his puppies with Greenfield puppies, after I got my girls from him.Also another very close Amish family of mine breeds Border collies and I talked to them because they sell there puppies on Greenfield also. I asked them how hard it is to sign up for them to be able to advertise there pups on there,she said they come out and completely check over there place and continue to do checks. No puppy mills are allowed at all. I am sure some slide through the cracks, But I know one thing for sure the two Amish families I know are almost as bad as me with there dogs. The one that sells yorkie's his even sleep in his bed with the kids. And they stay in the house. Let me tell you one thing for sure, If I would to think for one second that I find any one I know that breeds dogs has a puppy mill I would call the authorities right away with out hesitation. I do not care who they are. That is one of my problems when I come across some one that is not being nice to a dog for some reason I can not keep my mouth shut. Friend or not.

Why do they advertise with them though? I don't understand why a reputable breeder uses a site like that has tons of breeders & breeds listed to sell puppies?
Let's say you are a good breeder, not every breeder is and as you mentioned some slide through the cracks, so why would you associate your name with them?
This is a company making money off breeders selling puppies. JMO

Thanks everyone for your advice. I think I will start to contact some of the breeders on the YTCA list. I felt a little too intimidated at first due to my lack of experience, but I think it'll be worth it in the end.

As for this last comment, does it mean that if a site lists one or more questionable breeders, then it's hard to trust all the breeders listed on the same site? I ask this because I was looking at breeders.net yesterday. There were definitely some questionable listings (i.e. east coast parti yorkies, teacup yorkies) but I also saw Peanut Gallery Yorkies, and I believe the owner is a long-time member of this site and is friendly with most other members.

I guess my question then is, is it better to evaluate each breeder individually despite what sites they might be listed on? Thanks.

On a last note, this research is getting incredibly overwhelming...I wish someone would just plomp the name of the perfect breeder in front of me...one that just had a litter and lives 5 min away from me lol. Oh well...one can only wish =\

It is always a good idea to evaluate each breeder individually. As is often said in YT "You first buy your breeder"

You should always research a breeder individually.
The site that was mentioned has obviously been questionable for years. There are posts on YT and if you google you can find info.
I really don't know much about it, but it seems different from just a regular advertising site.
I was asking the question about it because with the questions and comments out there, I have to wonder why a reputable breeder would associate with it.

I know it can seem overwhelming, but finding the right breeder will be worth it in the long run! I wish you the best!

Don't be intimidated. I think you'll find that most of them will be more than happy to share their knowledge and passion of the breed with you.

I don't know about DCDogfinder or w/e it is. But before I found yorkietalk I was looking at Greenfield puppies in the yorkie section. I realized that their puppies didn't LOOK like Purebreds nor did their biewers or pomeranians. It was very strange. & when I called these "breeders" to find out more about their puppies they were ALL above yorkies standard weight. (no offense to ppl with teapot yorkies) but for ALL the yorkies advertised to not meet the standards showed me that they weren't breeding for the right reasons & they were most likley a puppymill. All the (Toy) puppies were said to grow up to 8-15 pounds!! They also seem to be located around the amish area. So it wasn't hard to put the pieces together, I figured this out back in my naive days, before my enlightenment through yorkietalk. Lol.

But in all seriousness.....I would stay away from that place if I were you.

I think the reason the advertise with them is because the Amish not having electric and of course not having computers or access to the out side world is the reason alot of them us these sites, Right or wrong ,that is what they do. I personally would not go though the site now that I know what I know . But I would not hesitate to purchase another Baby from the two Amish families that I know. I am not interested in having any more little fur babies I already have 6. I will not purchase from any one But If one would need a home I will not say I would not rescue another one if needed.

Whether they have electricity or not depends on whether they are Old Order or New Order Amish.
The Old Order Amish chose not to have electricity as they see the electric wires as a connection with the world. The leaders made the decision not to have electricity for the same reason they chose not have cars. They believe that easy access to the "outside world" would lead to many temptations and the deterioration of church and family life.

I lol-ed at that line, guess I'm a snob? I've had mutts before, but I didn't buy them and they were great dogs, and I called them mutts...didn't seem to bother them at all :p

I know you're looking for a yorkie, not a mutt but just want to throw that out there for anyone looking for a "designer hybrid" that happens across this page and does a google search. If they're willing to spout lies off about their mixes, who's to say what they'll tell their customers about their purebreds?
