need advice My 7-week old babies can scale a baby gate. I find that funny cuz even their momma cant do that, but that leaves me with a problem...how do i keep these little climbers confined??? I watched them climb it and they are like little monkeys. Anything that has a criss cross pattern-they will be able to scale. What can I do? I was checking out x-pens last night but I'm thinking they may be able to climb one of those too. I currently have their nursery crate in a bathroom and I put up a baby gate at the door to keep them confined. I did this so they can go in and out of the crate for potty, play, eating, etc. freely. The only thing i could think of to keep them safe for now is to close the door until I can come up with a solution. |

Hmmmm...I'm not sure how deep the gap is between your panels in the gate you have now, but how about having an inexpensive piece of plexiglass cut to fit. You could attach it to the inside of the panels with a low temp glue gun- that way if you didn't like it, you could just use a hair dryer to warm it up and remove it. |
I had 2 like that and just gave up..lol I was afriad they would fall and get hurt. I had the xpen that was 48". I couldn't find anything they couldn't climb. I was lucky and only had 2 or I would have been knee high in poo! lol During the day I could block off my kitchen with a thin sheet of wood. It wasn't pretty but worked..lol |
We have our little ones in an excercise pen. They could actually get through the pieces where the panels connected so we slid them together and used zip ties to keep them in place and put a sheet over the top to prevent scaling. It's amazing what wonderful athletes they are even at such a young age. I see why they do so well in agility! |

My pup would climb anything she could get a foothold on. It didn't matter if the baby gate had criss-crosses in the shapes of diamonds or squares. Expens with netting around didn't help, because those sharp little toenails could dig in through the netting and give her a place to hang on, too. With the expens, even if there is a top preventing them from climbing over and getting out, they will still try to climb. And, if they fall and get a foot stuck (same with the gates that they can climb), they could be caught hanging upside down for some time, injuring a leg or worse yet, dying. And, with the gates that have vertical bars, the small pups can just walk right through those gaps! I finally solved the problem by using two gates together. One on the inside, closest to the pup, with vertical slats so that there was no way to get a toehold, then an inch or two in front of that I put a gate with a vertical and horizontal grid. You have to place it far enough away from the inside gate that they can't use it to climb, but close enough that there isn't enough space between the two gates that that pup can't push their way in between and get stuck. |
I have one girl, Gracie, that was a climber as a puppy. She would climb up the x-pen like it was a ladder, even the tall ones. Finally I figured out that if I hung a sheet along the top half of the x-pen she could not climb out. That worked great when she was a puppy. Now that she is grown she just leaps over gates. On occasions now, when I need to confine her to a certain area, I have to put up two gates, one on top of another. A word of warning for those that have climbers, it can be dangerous. They can get a leg hung up in the wire when they are going over the top. |

My last litter a few months ago the largest boy was like that at 7 weeks..:eek: he was aweful...I ended up buying plexiglass at home depot, carefully drilling 4 holes in them (4 one for each side) on the 4 corners..broke one:(...went for another and wire tied them to the xpen...LOL he was so mad and just barked and whined till his momma would pounce on him. His first 7 weeks were great, the last 5 was the worst for me and him...:rolleyes: I only kept them in that when I was busy, had to leave for appts, or when using the stove.( I have balance problems and all my dogs "kennel up" when I am doing any tasks that could cause them harm and me.) Even so, every time he whined and barked and screamed. I let the new owner know about him and she named him Houdini which was awesome. Just if you used plexiglass GO SLOW cause it will crack easy...:) |
glass I use glass. The top of old storm doors that had glass on top.. I slide them behind some furniture and it works great. |
