Contraction question Do dogs contract like humans do? Do the contractions get closer together and longer as birth approachs? I would think so but then again, they sure have a different uterus! |
I asked my vet if he thought bitches experience pain as women do..and he felt fear was a huge factor with animals and humans alike...the more relaxed, the less painful it is...and dogs are so good at accepting pain and fear.. Bitches contract as labor progresses. The stomach tightens and they bare down as a human..they get closer as a rule and stronger...but I have seen many bitches barely react, belly remains motionless and pups slide out with a slight push. Some of my first time moms are unsettled and anxious..even whine and cry..then suddenly a pup is born and they realize why they were in pain..and all changes. No more fear and most are rather "sedated" the rest of the whelping. Some react with a yelp as the pup emerges, others do not.. I have had puppies born when mom was sound asleep and I had to nudge her to alert her a baby was born...the look of surprise is so funny. |

This is so true. Even though labor is a painful experience...how one handle's it does influence the degree of pain. It could also be that the 1st born pups help the bitch to focus more on them...then on the pain of delivery of the remaining pups. |
Thanks so much for your responses. My bitch was contracting all night and day and then she was lumpin up constantly. i let her out of the whelping area and she went under the bed. i checked on her . then when it go dark out i moved her back to her box and left her in the dark w the door closed and checked on her 15 min later and I came into the room and there was a PuP!!! Yippie... not pushing before this...it was a surprise! MY vet friend believes in dark rooms and leave them alone. 15 min later the second one arrived, then no after birth on the second. I spoke to my vet friend during the whelp and I gave her calcium and the contractions slowed and stopped! UGG! She to me I had to go to the ER for a calcium drip, so off we went in the middle of the night and the 2nd afterbirth and 3rd pup arrived safely. Previously she pushed agressively for two hours before pups came, it was different this time around. 2 girls and 1 boy! Now waiting on Daisy, she is due the 25th. Thanks again for all your help. I have learned so much from ya all here on YT. I am a novice and we all have to start somewhere.:D |
Gotta love vet who never bred Yorkies/Toys...Dark places, alone works for strays and feral cats..not Yorkies. They need to be in a quiet area and not able to run under furniture. You need to be close at hand to offer assistance..a pup might be stuck, bitch might need help..two could come at the same time and you will need to open a sac..or the bitch might be slow to open a sac or severe a cord and need you..or you lose a pup... When your girl starts to whelp, do not leave her alone for more then a few minutes..you will never regret being there, but will regret not being there if she needs help...best wishes PS...If bitch contracts heavily...Heaving (lumpin up) she needs vet attention after an hour..those are serious contractions..I go two hrs with lesser contractions and no pups...30 mins with a bubble and no pup... |
I wish i had a cam to set up and leave them alone when they whelp. so i could watch and no be on top of them to cause stress. I feel like i get her too excited. i only left her alone for those 15 min in the 2 days of showing labor. I was up for 3 consective nights and finally slept after the whelp from 4-6am. I was never so happy to sleep in my bed last night. Even though i was awake every 2 hours checking on mama and the babies. Like i said to many of you, i have learned a lot on here at YT and it has helped me tremendously and i was there for her durling the entire labor but the dark room worked for her for the first time also. so i do take both opinions. thanks all!!! |
I see your point..I do not hover...but I like them close so I can check..I am not stressed by whelping and see how ti would upset you girl. I do not like the dark because one winter the electric went out when one of my bitches whelped and it was pitch dark before I could get a light going..one pup got its foot chewed off...mom thought it was the cord, she could not see in the dark. |
