Looking to BUY/ADOPT a yorkie i live in the new york long island area, not more than an hour away i am looking for buy/adopt a second yorkie. i have 1 yorkie oliver, and i feel that he is lonely, he doesnt get much interactions with other dogs, and i think getting another dog will do the trick andmake him happier.i think i would prefer another male and not a teacup, i am not sure what is considered a teacup, but i am looking for a yorkie around 4-5 pounds, because my oliver is 4.9 pounds. i hope not to spend too much i would like to stay as little as possible. but i know how expensive yorkies can be. |

I would say if your first concern is spending "as little as possible" you might want to hold off on another Yorkie. You need to buy your breeder first and make sure you are dealing with someone reputable or even if you pay "cheap" up front it will cost you in vet bills down the road! You are correct, Yorkies are expensive up front & long term! Best of luck! |

You've gotten great advice so far. I just want to add that in general, dogs of the opposite sex get along the best. In other words, a boy likes a girl more than he does another boy. But no matter what combination you end up choosing, make sure to have them all sterilized to ensure that they get along and don't make accidental babies. I think if a person is not a breeder, they must sterilize all their animals: Responsible Pet Ownership  |

May I ask you why you feel he needs a companion? Be honest. There's no right or wrong answer. There are some dogs that are better with them. Just few of them. |
reply the reason i was looking for a specific weight was so that the new dog was around the same size as the dog my have now, we have a yorkie across the street and he is huge, and my oliver is afraid of larger dogs, also i think he might be lonely, all he does all day is sleep and wait on the stairs so someone to come home, i feel if there is another dog in the house it will keep him more busy and in the end make him happier. and everyone thanks so much for the tips to far |
You could just say you're looking for a standard size yorkie in the 4-7 pound range which should be fine for your little guy. My two are Bandit who is around 4.5 pounds and Nala who is around 6 pounds and they play great together. You've gotten great advice so far:) Keep looking for breeders who stay away from the 'teacup' term and are more interested in health and wellbeing of the puppy than size. I'm from Westchester and for our second puppy we went to a breeder ouside Albany and the pup was very reasonably priced and extremely healthy and right in the weight range. |

I don't think you should get another dog to keep him company. If you question his happiness, take him to puppy classes. His age doesn't matter. Put him on a schedule that includes a daily walk, scheduled time for dog training etc. These things will boost him confidence. Dogs don't teeach one another good habits. They usually become annoyed when you add company if they don't feel in control. Dogs sleep most of the time, but most of these terriers will show more energy than you expect. Health is always a consideration of course. If he's old he could really be mad if you add to the family. It is okay to mix boys with boys or girls as long as they've been altered. I worry about people looking for cheap dogs. It's problematic. We know that you get what you pay for. I don't sell dogs. I'm just helping you out. Take him to class, boost his self esteem. You will have a new relationship. |

I too have to agree that the opposite sex is better. My Coco (female) was also "lonely" and for years wanted to get another one - but never the right time. When my son brought home another female for me to watch for a few days - my Coco did not like her at all. We eventually got another puppy - male - and they just love each other. I feel that companionship is great for them. My Coco is definitely a different dog since we got our little Beckham - but keep in mind - they are somewhat the same type of personality - very calm and not hyper. So personalities are very important also. Good luck with your search. |
