Do you tie the umbilical cord with floss before cutting it? My yorkie is due any day now, we took her to the Vet last week for an x-ray and shows 3 puppies. Today she is on day 59, last night I thought she was in labor for she was breathing a bit heavier than usual but than she seemed more relaxed and now she is just lying most of the time. I was just wondering if you do need to tie the umbilical cord with floss before cutting it. Last time I made the mom break the umbilical cord and one of the puppies cord started bleeding and it was than that I tied it with floss to stop the bleeding, I want to prevent that from happening again, can anyone please give me any suggestions. |
I use hemostat to clamp and cut the cord. I have used dental floss but don't like to because I get nervous and it is hard for me to tie it off. I always break the sack and cut the cords.. I never let mom do it. |

I use the dental floss method with no problems. But as already mentioned, hemostats work just as well and are a bit easier to deal with. I prefer not to let mom do the cords either. |
I just use regular thread, not floss. I personally don't use the hemostat because it feels heavy to me and I don't want anything tugging at the belly - but then I'm very anal!! lol Either way you decide, don't let the mom do it herself - that's just asking for trouble with these tiny newborns. Good luck! |
Do I tie it first and than cut the cord or do I cut the cord and than tie it? |
You can find them at a medical supply store. Since your so close unwaxed dental floss will work fine. I had even after I used the hemostat I had to tie it with dental floss because it wouldn't stop bleeding. I always have to have help to do the floss I am not steady enough. I just wanted to add I use 2 hemostats and cut in between. That way the one near mom will keep the placenta from slipping back in when it all doesn't come out at first. |

Are hemostat's a scissor type gadget - but not sharp enough to cut - is it just a clamp? I believe I viewed it in a video - and I too thought it was quite large and heavy to use on a newborn - but IDK. |
Just a clamp. Kind of look like scissors though: Hemostats: American Pet Pro | Wholesale Pet Grooming Supplies | Pet Care They do make some that are smaller and plastic. Much less bulky, I would assume: Umbilical Cord Clamp,Disposable Umbilical Cord Clamp,Plastic Umbilical Cord Clamp |
Since you are on day 59, you are running too short on time to get them through the mail. You can buy the metal hemostats at any nursing uniform store. You may also be able to pick them up at a medical supply store. |
If you can't find hemostats, you can use the locking type fishing pliers. They look almost exactly the same as hemostats - get them in the sporting goods section at Wal-Mart. Be sure to thoroughly clean them before using. My vet, Dr. Amy, gave me that tip. :D |
I use a clamp..leave it a few mins..then cut..no floss. Rarely, does it bleed after taking it off, but if it does, I replace it for a few mins.. I have had puppies shoot out like they were shot from a cannon...cord severed flush to the skin..scary..in that case use a cotton ball and apply pressure..usally clots in 10 mins...I just Ouick-stop on the cotton...vet can stitich it if need be ,but never needed it. Best wishes... |
Thank you every one, I actually do have a small wire clamp that has little tiny teeth like shape for a good grip. Do you think that might work? |
Yes...boil it. |
