Reputable/Responsible Pet/Show owner What does a breeder expect from the new owner? What questions does the breeder expect the perspective pet/show owner to ask? What does a breeder want in a future pet/show owner....Add more if one likes. I would like to see what "we" expect from our new future homes... |
I do not ask much from the pet owner..simply love my Yorkie, give it the best care possible and return it to me if you are not able to continue this love and care. As to the show owner..I perfer mine are in pet homes...EXCEPT for Lorraine. |

· To provide a safe, healthy, happy environment for the new pup · To secure regular, and timely vet health care · To train the pup to become a good neighbour – well socialized · To alert the breeder to any problems they may be having be it, temperament, health, or other issues that affect the pup · To return the dog to me, if they find themselves in a position that they can no longer care for the dog · To do the breed specific health tests as agreed to by contract. Pet Owner Questions of Breeder: Putting this into the prespective of a conversation between two strangers, there is of course, a lot of information that the breeder should be open and transparent with, so that the potential new owner doesn’t have to ask, given this understanding if the breeder has not shared the infor then I would expect the pet owner to: · Background information on the breeder – how long in breed?,how many breeds do I breed?, references including a vet reference, actively competing with their dogs?, in what areas? Ie show, agility, obedience, rally, member of the breed club in good standing?,member of the CKC? · What kind of support will I receive from you over the years? · History and lineage of pup for sale · Medical History of sire and dam – Incidence of health problems in their lines · Registries breeder uses to a)register litter and b) for the various genetic tests · Official registered name of dam and sire with registration numbers · Does this breed have any unique health and or training needs I should be aware of? · When do you let your puppies go? · What is your health guarantee and may I review it? · How is the breed with children? Other pets – dogs cats · Has this pup been temperament tested? Results? · May I see/meet the sire and the dam · Grooming needs of the dog? · |
I was just commenting on the reputable breeder thread that more scrutiny of buyers is needed. I was not asked many questions before finding my dog Teddy but I can think of a lot of good ones. The most surprising to me was that no one asked for my vet's info to see if I actually take care of my dogs. |
to 107barney-- You said on the other thread that you volunteered quite a bit of information about yourself up front to the breeders you contacted. That likely was enough for them to want to meet you. There should have been more specific discussion during a personal visit, and certainly the question of what one would do with a pet they could no longer care for should have been addressed then. A responsible breeder will have it in their contract with the buyer that should such a situation arise the pet is to be returned to the breeder. As nice and ideal as it sounds for a breeder to phone a buyer's vet and/or visit their home, it's just not practical, and one has to be mindful of boundaries and overstepping. I don't feel comfortable with that, and wonder how much a vet would be free to discuss anyway. Most clients come here with enough dog stories to convince me they are good, caring and responsible pet owners. |
I wouldn't hesitate to contact a vet about a potential buyer but keeping in mind I might not find out much due to confidential information but a vet can give some kind of insight to a person's intentions with their animals care. I typically can figure out if they are a good home in taking my time to talk with a buyer over a course of a couple of days ect. I just don't sell a pup to someone I can't speak to for several days and then meet them in person. Sometimes I can tell right away if I want to deal with a particular person. I even ask if a buyer has kids and how young they are... |

I think you could ask a potential buyer to sign a consent form to speak to the vet. How many would actually put pen to the paper... That right there would tell you volumes! |
I always speak to the new owners vet..I ask if they cared well for their previous pet...funny, thing is, it got around that I did this and people started bringing me a letter from their vets or permission to call them before me asking...LOL |
I ask and call the vets too. I ask about care to previous pets they have had and this includes teethcleaning, etc... The vets I have contacted always tell me. |
This thread will be a refresher course for me since I haven't had a litter in 3 years LOL...and it's looking like it'll be a couple more years before I do...I love all the information and things others do. Keep it coming! |
Yep, just contact the Vet, he will tell all. Vet check is a must. |
I too contact the vets. Some tell and others need permission to talk about their patients. I also call the references of the perspective puppy owner to make sure he/she is a good and loving parent. |
I think it is awesome that some breeders contact the buyer's vets. I wouldn't mind if a breeder wanted to phone my vet because I know that my vet couldn't say anything negative - even though I feed a raw diet, don't overvaccinate and don't deworm as regularly as other pet owners. for checking vets! |

I recieve updated pictures of thew puppy all the time and I really appreciate that. If she ever has a question about his care, she always contacts me first. Of course, I did not make one dime on the puppy... and never expected to... my biggest concern was making sure that he went to a home that would LOVE and APPRECIATE him and spoil him as rotten as he deserved to be. I think I accomplished my mission. |
