How long heat lasts?
 
Maya has been in heat for 3 weeks now and although she is not bleeding anymore, her valva and titis are still swollen. How long until it goes down?

I have had dogs breed after day 21 so I would keep her up another week just to be safe.

How Long Does Heat Last?

If your dogs in heat, how long will it last?


The heat period varies from 8 to 30 days with an average of about 20 days. Most female dogs will allow breeding around 10 to 16 days after start of the cycle.
You should consider your pet to be "in heat" for 21 days: 7 days coming into heat, 7 days in heat, 7 days going out. Though conception is most likely during the middle 7 days. If you want to ensure that your dog will not become pregnant, you should keep her confined for the entire 3 week period. Again, not all dogs follow with the norm. Watch your female and record her cycle. It will usually stay the same throughout her lifetime.

Thanks for the detailed info! so today its her 21st day and her private parts are still swollen. She still licks it quite often by the way. I hope it will go down soon!

Umm just a thought. Are you on HRT hormone replacement therapy, particularly if it is delivered through a cream supplement?

My Zoey will stay swollen in her vulva for at least 7=10 days after "heat" ie after 21 days.

And once they've gone into heat once the vulva will not go down to the same size prior to their first heat.

No, she is not on any type of treatment what so ever. Thanks for sharing Zoey's story. Now I know that Maya is not the only one. Makes me feel better :)
