Carment Batagglia puts on wonderful seminars. One that I've taken and recommend anyone that is entering the dog world should take.

I wish she came to the East Coast. A breeder is a special person with a lot of time, energy, and passion for improving the breed. Even though I don't breed, I would love to see her seminars. I think it would raise the bar on the standards of the breed if common Yorkie owners and potential buyers knew the effort that is put behind it, and whether or not their potential breeder is a good fit for them to purchase from. Breeding has turned so political and frowned upon because of a few unethical breeders, but I'm still optimistic that there are fabulous and passionate Yorkie breeders out there. There are numerous breeders who show their passion and interest for the breed on YT, and that makes me happy.

Carmen is a man. Check out the website....there is a schedule of seminars....he travels all over the country and even conducts a cruise seminar.

Reputable breeder/exhibitors have taken more than this course and continue to take courses. Canine Genetics, breeding, whelping, training, nutrition, health classes. Learning never stops.

Breeding hasn't turned political, showing is and always has been. Anyone can breed, but are you doing it in the best interest of the breed.

Thank you! I will check out his website. Breeding is, IMO, a bit political as well. Common people in society frowns upon breeders, classifying them negatively due to the influence of many animal rights groups. There are ill-intentioned people, and those people are a part to all sectors. Some animal rights groups slander the breeder name, but at the same time, the rescues that they 'save' gets killed. Not every person thinks like this, and not every rescue group operates in such a way. I'm thankful for responsible breeders, and I'm thankful for the efforts of animal rights groups that focus on offering their rescues something better than a short life.

Well we know there is Animal Rights and Animal Welfare. We know the mission Animal Rights Activists are on. And you're right because of this and their agenda, they have made it political. However, what they are doing is only stamping out the responsible breeders and allowing the Puppy Mills to remain in business.

The problem is with the word "breeder." Anyone whose dog gets pregnant is a breeder. Too many people are wanting to suppliment their incomes and decided letting their dogs do the work is easier than getting a job. While some animal rights groups are against any breeding, others like the HSUS and ASPCA are very much for responsible breeding. The problem is every backyard breeder justifies their breeding program, and tries to pretend that they are a responsible breeder. It's great to see others who truly want to learn more and better their programs, instead of just justifying them.

I'm also in favor of the ASCPA; from what I gather, they support responsible breeding and try to save those in puppy mills and from the neglect of back yard breeders. There is definitely a difference in a breeder and someone who puts their dogs in contact to get pregnant, without following through with a vet, and trying to make a living out of it. Anyone who has had a pregnant animal could be considered a breeder, and it is sad that they ruin the name for the good breeders out there. And I agree with you 100%; no one wants to take responsibly for their actions. And no breeder will admit that they are in it for monetary reasons; a backyard breeder, a puppy broker, or a puppy mill will all do their best to masque their motives and to keep a good reputation for as long as they can. Thank goodness for the internet and for resources! Back in the '90s, I saw more pet stores in the Atlanta area, and would have never guessed that most pet store animals were coming from puppy mills. Most pet stores shut down rather quickly, but they are still out there. And people are still purchasing from them, and ending up heartbroken in the end. It's very sad, indeed.

With that said, I know that there are a lot of politics in showing also. I think it would be a great idea to have a section on YT for critiquing the judges; of course I would hope there would be a Sticky for those that critiqued so that judging would be done in fairness. My friends that show their Furbabies are always talking about how every judge is so different; some will disqualify for being too dark, others for being too light. Some prefer squeaky toys to show the dog's working class capabilities, others frown upon them. It would be nice if there was a place to find out more on a judge, so that those that showed their beauties could decide if it would be a fair competition, if it would be worth entering, and if so, what to expect from a judge. There are forums and lists, and I know my friends usually Google the judge's name, and can find an ample amount of information on the judge's style and reviews from others. And of course, I'm sure that judges use favoritism on judging also. It's not very fair to be bias in a competition, but I'm sure there aren't a lot of fair people out there. You have some beautiful Yorkies; I know that you must be proud!

The show world is very political, I said that earlier. However, if one is serious in their goals, and you're taking good dogs in the ring consistently, you need to let that roll off your back. If you can't take the heat then don't jump in the fire.

I belong to a couple judges lists, although they aren't for critiquing, more for those judges that are DQing and their reasons for doing so. Exhibitors pretty much know what judges prefer and how they judge.
