HELP! We have Babies! Mom Rejecting?? MINI HAD A "C" SECTION TODAY, 10-27! On Tuesday Mini was x-rayed and we saw she had 3 pups, two on one side with heads down in position and one on the other side positioned feet first. We waited three days, and even though Mini scratched and began nesting ~ she did not pant or show signs of labor ~ and this morning she was simply tired. My Vet had recommended a "C" section on Tuesday due to the positioning of the large single pup ~ but we wanted to give Mini time ~ The "C" Section was at 1:30pm this afternoon, the cork stopper is a beautiful little girl weighing 5oz., and two boys, one 4.9oz. and one 4.2oz. I brought all three straight home and fed them. I picked up Mini at 5:00pm, she was slightly groggy ... but so far, is totally NOT INTERESTED IN HER PUPS! The Vet seemed to think the biggest problem would be the pups chewing on her sutures ... well, that won't happen if she doesn't even want to go into the box with her pups. She won't even look at them! She turns her head! Is there something I can do? How long can she reject them before her milk really doesn't come in at all? Right now she has NO milk, NO cholestrum. This is Mini's first breeding, she doesn't seem to want anything to do with her babies~ HELP! If anyone has experienced this problem and has any ideas, please let me know! |
I would say keep trying to express the milk yourself. Give her some cottage cheese to help her body produce enough calcium, therfore milk. Try to see if you can distract her so the pups can eat. Keep us posted. Keep them warm! |
It may be that she is not producing milk (yet) because hormones were not released in the normal way due to the C-section. You may think I am crazy, but this might be worth a try if you ever DO get any milk to come out. (This is what you have to do w/ goats....DON'T ASK!) Rub some of the milk into the puppies' fur...this may help her recognize them as hers. |
I have only had to have one c-section, and mother and babies all stayed together. So I am not much help there, sorry. I would continue to putting her in with the babies and stay with her. See if she will even allow the puppies to try and nurse. It will take her awhile to come around from being put under. You may have to continue supplemental feedings for tonight, but keep trying. If she will eat put some of the milk replacer on her food. If her milk doesn't drop good in a couple of days you can alway try a oxytocin injection to see if that will bring in the milk. My litter just born on Sunday just had to be put on another mother, Maevie just wasn't putting on enough milk :( for 5 puppies and one was getting dehydrated. Good luck and keep us posted. |

I heard you are supposed to save the placentas and refrigerate them in a c-section situation and then take it out and heat it a little to rom temp and rub the puppies bottoms with the placenta and leave the "mess" down by her rear end so she "thinks" she gave birth naturally and the instincts kick in. It is also best to let her start labor even with a planned c-section so she licks her teats, and al the other things that natually occur, etc. There is a lot of info on the internet about breeding and c-sections. I hope she starts to show an interest in and nurses her babies soon. It is hard work to bottle feed three newborns around the clock. I wish I could help. Keep us posted. |
I have had restless moms that want in and out a lot, to solve this for at least the first week I keep them confined in a very small area like a actual play pen or you might try a medium size crate just large enough for her to lay down that will force her into getting to know these kids....its so important they nurse the first three days for the colostrum and stay extemely warm. I hope she warms up to them soon!! good luck |
Thank you, I wish I had heard of the placenta save sooner! But, Mini is quite small at 5lbs. I think she went into labor on Wednesday night digging and panting all night - by Thursday am she was exhausted, had stopped everything and just lay there for hours ... that's when I made the decision to take her for "C" ... I waited 3 days beyond the Vet's recommendation. But she has no milk, no colestrum, she is dry. She does not want anything to do with the puppies, she growls and actually snapped when I put her in with them. She is on cottage cheese and calcium and has been her entire gestation ... and now I am masaging and hoping. Babies are fine, warm and fed every 4 hours with Nurturall-c fortified with colestrum ... I was going to use goats milk ... but the Vet gave me this so I'm using it. I have a call in to the Vet about Oxytoxin ... but will a shot of Oxytoxin make her a mother who wants to nurse? Since she had the C on Thursday, is Monday too late for the Oxytoxin? I wish the Vet would hurry up and call me back! Please ./.. any suggestions??? She doesn't seem to have any more mother's instinct than a slug! I think my 'ol man Yorkie, Chipper, would do better! Mini absolutely will not stay in the box with them~~! :rain:  |
I hope you get it figured out! good luck! |
Try to make mom get in with them,, I would watch her closely though. My Bell never had a C section, SO I'm not speaking from experience, But I know some people make their moms stay with the pups even if she doesn't want to. Good Luck |
Thank You, Thank You!! Mini Is Nursing!! 2 Attachment(s) All of you are so helpful!! I have learned so much in such a couple of days!! Mini had a "C" on Thursday... the "corkstopper" was the 5oz little girl, feet first. Mini completely rejected her babies. She had NO Colestrum, NO Milk, NO Motherly love! She even barked and snapped at her babies, she has been hiding out under my dresser! :( You taught me about Oxytoxin! Warm cloths and kneading her! She had to have the injection to bring in her milk, plus warm cloths and kneading her teats. Milk came in about 8 hours later. Last night at 11pm we laid her on our bed, attached her babies and held her while they nursed ... at 3am I heard the cry, flipped on the light and there was Mini ... looking in at them, this time she did not have to be held! :D You taught me not to give up ... and I was in tears! Now we have to find a way for her to start cleaning them! Little by little, one step at a time! |
Get some nutical or pet drops. Sometimes they reject the pups if they have a calcium defiency. Or you can give her a half of a tums until you can get the nutrical. Does she potty them? If not put the nutrical on the puppy's belly. Hold the puppy and let her lick the nutrical off of the puppy. She needs to be pottying them! Please do this immediately or you could lose the pups. They go down hill very fast. You can get the nutrical at a pet store. Best Wishes! |
What wonderful news!! The babies are beautiful .... hopefully before you know it Mini will be the devoted Mom and all will be normal! Congratulations on your beautiful babies and your patience!! I would be a basket case!! ;) |
Oh, what wonderful news!!!! I just read this post for the first time and was so relieved to hear she STARTED NURSING!!!! It actually brought tears to my eyes. A c-section is so unnatural for them. My Mom's had a c-section and I went over to try and get her to accept the pups....they are like little aliens to the mother after a c-section. She finally accepted them within a couple of hours. You did and ASOME job keeping those pups alive until her instincts kicked in....CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! |
That is great news I know you are relieved!!! |
