Puppys are almost 4 weeks old!!! 2 Attachment(s) Tomorrow the puppies will be 4 weeks old! It seems like time is flying by. They are so active now playing, barking, and growling. It is so cute! I am alittle concerned about Shortie and her feeding them. She seems to not have much interest in letting them feed long. They are eating alot more of the esiblac then they have been. They are gaining weight very good. When do you think I should introduce soft dog foods to them? Any advice on the weaning process is greatly appriciated. I really think Shortie might be already trying to wean them. Also some of them still have their stitch from their tails being docked. When should they come out? They are the kind that you don't get took out that come out on their own. Thanks again, Shelly :D |
I sure can't give you any advice because i am 3 weeks behind you. my bunch will be 1 wk old tomorrow so i will be watching for any advice to you. You sure do have a pretty cute group there? |
Very cute puppies. They grow so fast. My vet said baby food, cottage cheese and nutrastat, I'm pretty sure. And some mom's just wean faster than others I think. I'm not an expert though. My little girl was weaned from her mommy completely at 4 1/2 wks. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Congrats on the pups though! They are sooooo cute! :aimeeyork |
We always started at five weeks. But This was with bigger puppies. Your puppies are so cute. Loved the pictures. |

When Mollie's babies where that age I had to make her lay down to feed them and sometimes I had to lock her in the crate with them. None of mine had their teeth until they were between 5 & 6 weeks old. |
I sometimes still see the stitch in the tail at 5 weeks and it seems to come right out if you pull on it.... one time I did ask the vet at the 6 week checkup to take any remaining "thread" out of their tails. I usually start the wet food at 4 weeks (real wet) so they learn how to lap food. By 5 weeks they are eating the soaked dry food... and seem to be munching on the dry... by 6 weeks they are totally weaned from mom. Good luck with your little cuties! :) |
I begin weaning at 4 weeks and totally wean by 5 weeks, their teeth begin to hurt mom's teats, she becomes far less tolerant to nursing by then. I first begin with a mush, royal canin baby puppy pulverized mixed with goats milk. By 5 weeks I quit pulverizing it and let it slightly soak before feeding as well I keep a small bowl of the hard food available. Once I see them eating a lot out of the hard food I stop adding goats milk and only feed the dry. |
How often do you feed the puppies the food mixed with the goats milk? I put some of their esiblac mixed with goats milk in a little pan last night and they all lapped it up really good. I tried mixing puppy food and goats milk and one ate it real well but the other 5 didn't seem interested. This is their weights: #1 birth weight 4oz- 28 days old-19 oz #2 " " 2oz- " " " -12 oz <-- He is my Little Champ #3 " " 3oz- " " " -15 1/2 oz #4 " " 3 1/2 oz " " -18 oz #5 " " 4 oz " " -21 oz #6 " " 3 1/2 oz " " -19 oz I just can't get over how good they are doing and how fast they are growing. I am already so attached to them. I dread it when it is time for them to go to new homes. I am keeping Little Champ though. Thanks again for great advice. Shelly |
Congratulations on your new babies! I tried to get better pics but with them all up running around it is hard to get them all still for even a second. |
I start weaning when the mom is ready. I smash up the puppy food that I use..2 parts BilJac and 1 part Royal Canin- and mix in a wee bit of canned puppy food with hot water and make it realy soupy at first. Then as they lick it off your fingers and start lapping it on their own, I make it thicker. I make little pyramids so they can eat it easier. They make the biggest messes and their poop stinks..Mom no longer will clean them so I keep baby wipes near to wipe faces and hineys.. |
Congrats...adorable puppies...good luck :) |
Five! They are really cute, must be walking by now! What fun! |
