Small and Clogged teats Hi one of my girls just had pups 3 days ago and the upper two teats are engorged but do not express milk. I have put warm compress but they are getting harder. I am able to get a "pin hole" amount of milk expressed from one but the other doesn't express milk at all. Anyone encounter this before? |
BUMP! Sorry, I don't know anything about breeding. |
This is a pretty common occurrence with new mommas. You can try warm compresses or cabbage compresses to get the swelling down. I would not let it go very long because it can lead to mastitis. I really recommend you take her to your vet. Sometimes an antibiotic is needed to get the swelling down. I always give my mommas amoxicillin when that happens and the swelling goes down by the next day. With the cabbage compress I think you are supposed to take a raw cabbage leaf that has been crushed some and hold it on the swollen teat. I have never had to do that but some say it works well. Good luck. |
Thanks, we have an appt today again...were there yesterday to get tails n dew claws and of course Momma was fine then. What is odd is these teats do not express Milk at all, they appear small in size as if she were never pregnant nor lactating...I'll find out and see what vet says... |
How did the vet visit go? It is not unusual for the top teats to not have much milk. They will get hard in the beginning because they are not being used and as the momma's body adjusts to how much milk to produce, depending on how much the pups are nursing, the teats will normally go down. The nursing mommas always need to be watch closely because sometimes the mammary gland get stopped up and if left untreated it can lead to mastitis. How many pups is your girl nursing? |
Vet said she was fine...the top teats are not really producing but just to keep warm compresses and keep an eye out on them. She is nursing 4 pups |
