Need help - Maya might be in heat.
 
Maya is 9 Months old an this is the first time I have a female. I heard that their first heat is usually short and blood-less. Is it true? how does it look and how much blood I should expect? How can I even tell if she is in heat?

Her vulva will swell. Some dogs are really clean about it so you might not see much blood. My dog was messy about it...I found a drop of blood on her blanket. Just keep her away from any males for the next 3-4 weeks.

What about breeding ?
 
Is it recommended to wait until the second heat before breeding?

Yes....if you are planning on breeding....most of the time there is not much blood, keep a log of her behavior during each heat cycle, my girls become less active and turn into little cuddle bugs, wanting lots of attention, more than usual....

Yes, at least then. Sometimes even longer depending on how old the dog is during their second heat.

Looking back over your posts, I see where you have mentioned several times that your girl is extremely small--a little over 2 lbs at 6 months and that you were only expecting her to be around 3.5 lbs as an adult. That is waaaay too small for a female to be used for breeding, so hopefully you are really considering that for her...

Hi! Thanks for this comment. She is 3.5 Ibs now and I was wondering about that. I am not planning on breeding her more than once. I just wanted two-three babies from her and thats all I guess.. what are the risks?

Even once would be a HUGE risk and once is enough for disaster. The general rule of thumb for Yorkies is not to breed a female under 5 lbs, minimum. Your girl is considerably less than that. Even then, you have to make sure that the pelvic structure of such a small gal can handled carrying a litter. Breeding such a small girl increases the chances of having to have a c-section, it could result in a ruptured uterus, etc. Definitely NOT worth it.

I would suggest that you find a mentor to spend time with in advance...see first hand what goes on if you are curious to get a first hand glance of it all.

Alot of risk the biggest she could die. She is way to small. It would be best just to have her spayed.

From experience I could tell right away when Penny was in Heat! Her lady parts swelled so much she started waddling. LOL Also, she had a bled substantially. It didnt usually drip but when you wiped her down there you would get blood. Her mannerisms didnt change however. No humping, or excessive barking, or flagging. And her teats swelled. She was in heat for a good 4 weeks.

Hi again... I was asking around and someone told me that maybe I should breed her with a small male yorkie as well, so like that the pups potentially will be smaller and would fit her size. Any comments on that?

The size of the male wouldn't matter...you would still be breeding a 3.5 lb female...still too small to breed.

Furthermore, the size of the male and female alone means little. You have to consider the size of the other dogs in their lines as well. For all you know, the smaller male could be the runt of a litter that averaged 6 lbs.

Anyway you look at it, if she remains so small, breeding her would be VERY risky and not advised.

Still a huge risk. Just because the stud is small does not guarantee his puppies will be small. You need to know how big the parents and grandparents are for both dogs. Again, I would never breed a girl under 5 pounds ever.
When people ask me for stud service. I always ask them if they are willing to loose their girl. Most decide not to breed.
Please just have her spayed and enjoy her as a pet. Breeding is not worth the heartache and stress.

I'm no expert but it sounds like a really bad idea. I would never jeopardize my dogs life to breed her :confused:
