Question about breeding sizes?? I have a little furbaby that I would absolutely LOVE to breed. She has been certified for hips, knees, and eyes. Plus she has a wonderful sweet disposition, she is calm and inquisitive and I think would make an excellent mother. The question I have is, since she is on the small side at 4.5 lbs is it possible to breed her with a male her size or smaller? She is such a gorgeous dog and I already have a few people who would want pups from her. What is everyone's opinions? |
My opinion is if you're going to do this right, find a mentor. They will help you evaluate your little girl to see if she's capable of safely carrying a litter and whelping. Good luck! |

Also how old is she? Even if you bred her to a smaller male, that doesnt mean he will throw small pups. Depends on genetics. I would consult with your vet. Alot goes into breeding...from the actual breeding to the whelping and its not always easy. Alot can happen and will happen. (speaking from experience) Good luck in what you decide. |

Lets see what others will say and we can have a poll . Blessings XOXO |
The size of your girl and the male used for breeding alone means little. You have to take into consideration the sizes of the other dogs in their lines as well. Also, have the females in her line had an issue with free whelping? In addition, more so than her actual size/weight, her pelvic structure has to be considered as well. It's not at all unheard of for a larger 6-7 lb female to have a narrower pelvic structure that would make breeding risky. Personally, 4.5 lbs is really borderline and risky, IMO. I think that the advice given regarding finding a mentor (if you don't already have one) is the best advice. A well seasoned breeder will be able to help you evaluate her in this instance way better than anyone here could. :) You didn't give her age...perhaps she still has a bit of growing to do and may get a bit larger? I do want to give you kudos for having her thoroughly screened though. |
She turned a year old on 4-8-10. I want to thank everyone for their loving advice and I will take all thoughts into consideration. After speaking with the breeder, Penny has a long line of free whelpers. Her mother has had three litters without any problem thus far and the breeder says her grandmother had little problems as well. |
It is great that you have done the necessary testing. :) I hope many breeders will give you their opinion to help make your desicion. Just remember that her little life will be in danger and anything can happen. Hopefully nothing bad would take place, but it could. Good luck to you! What type of certification did you get for her hips, knees and eyes? She is only a year old correct? |
