hi all :) i posted this before but in the wrong place i guess. my yorkie, zoey, is 2yrs old. normal weight is 5lbs. i also have a pomchi, baby, he is 6 yrs old and is about 11-12 lbs. we had to be out of town in may for my daughters wedding and had to leave dogs with ppl to take care of them. we were told they would keep them apart, but that didn't happen. so now my zoey is pregnant. due the last week of july. i am concerned if puppies will be too big for her to deliver. a lot of ppl have said they would be. then the other day i saw a post where someone said that the size of the puppies while inside is determined by the mother. is this true? i am confused.

Take her in to the Vet and have an x-ray taken of her and that should tell you how many pups and an approximate size of the pups.

She needs to be seen by a Vet around 54-55 days for an xray.

i agree..since he is over twice her weight i would have x rays taken.....good luck sweetie....not good that they didnt do what you asked......but im thinking with those blood lines ....those are gonna be some gorgeous puppies.

I'm concerned for your little girl too, if it were my dog, I'd have her spayed immediately. Best of luck, but you really need to talk to a vet.

I agree, but as with all the others that have had an oops, I doubt she will either.

Hi, Norine, glad to see you started your own thread. You really need to have that x-ray done to see the # and size of the pups. That will go a long way in helping you know what you are facing.

Though x-rays are often off on the number of pups, you will get a good idea of the size of them and will know if a c-section is likely due to size. Of course, that isn't the only reason for a section but is info you need to have.

Yes, the dam controls the size of the pups in utero. Having more pups generally will keep the size down a bit as opposed to a single pup, but again, that is not always true. You can have a big pup in a large litter or a small single baby. The only time one of mine delivered a singleton, it was not a big pup. Nothing is 'cut and dried' with litters and every one is an individual event.

There are complications that arise beyond the size of the pups. Usually about half of them will be head first and half butt first. There are other presentations and some are very difficult for the Mom to deliver. You will need to familiarize yourself with these so you won't be caught off guard.

Get your girl in for that x-ray and you'll know much more. Make sure you have a whelping area in a quiet part of the house set up and get your supplies together. Remember that it's not unusual for them to deliver early so don't count on a fixed date. Keep us posted and ask any questions you may have.

I know you're regretting not spaying her a year and 1/2 ago about now. This pregnancy could be fatal for your female! Xrays and contact with your Vet is very important. If there is only 1 very big baby in there or even several babies, could be devastating. There are so many things that can go wrong, I'm hoping you spay and neuter your kids asap, then you won't have to worry about keeping them separated.

Nancy, with her being two weeks out from delivery, many vets would advise not taking the pups so late. But yes, she does need to see her vet and have him/her on speed dial. There's no way any of us can fully evaluate her situation so a qualified person needs to see this girl.

I'm in agreement with you. I know of no vet that will do a spay this late in the game....

I agree that a vet on speed dial and of course if at all possible someone with some knowledge to assist the OP.

The examing vet could schedule a C-section. But, only would do so if an x-ray and an ultra-sound were performed to determine the size and position of the pups and the size of the mother's birth canal and vaginal opening, deemed it necessary.

First and foremost, to answer your question. You need to have her xrayed around day 55. This will give you and your vet a good indication as to what size the pups appear to be and if a c-section will likely be needed.

Secondly, I don't understand how you could let this happen. You've posted about having problems with them before trying to mate...and stated then that you were going to have the male fixed.

I'm confused as to how you could allow their behavior to continue rather than taking the proper precautions to ensure the health and well being of your dogs? No, sadly, your female's well being is at risk--SHE is the one that will have to pay the price for your "oversight." :(
