Questions about heat cycle ???? I know this is probably a dumb question, but I know there some great experts on here so I will ask anyways. Philly my 8 month old Yorkie is in heat and has been for 16 days . I plan to have her spayed and her appointment is already set. However I also have a 6 year old male yorkie and he isn't really sure what to do but trys to hump her , I bought her diapers and she is also in and out of her pen but she is home w/ my 17 year old daughter during the day who doesn't watch her like a hawk as I do . So my question is Can she get pregnant after her heat cycle? Also her I guess you call them teets ( breasts ) are swollen ..is this normal during the heat cycle...I worry she may be pregnant w/ being swollen there. She isn't as playful as normal ...still plays just not as much ...is this also from being in heat. UGGGG I cant wait until she is fixed. Any advice would be much appreciated. :animal36:animal36 Thank you YT! |
The heat cycle will last approximately three weeks or longer, so yes, if your male is not neutered and he bred her she could get pregnant. Please do not leave them alone unsupervised. It is common for females to have a personality change when they are in heat and for a couple of months following their heat cycle. The vulva will swell a lot when the female is in heat. I recommend you proceed with getting her spayed but I would wait about two more weeks. |

Spay during heat is not a good idea, but it should last about 21 days, and a few more weeks after that makes the spay very safe. Swollen nipples are normal during heat, her vulva also must be huge, all the outside symptoms of heat cycle. If she mated or if you let it happen she has a big possibility of getting pregnant. But remember, 8 months is way to young to breed and there is a H-U-G-E risk of complications, Serious complications, so discuss it well with your vet and proceed with the spay .Suggestion: Go ahead and neuter your boy as well... you will be in peace ! Blessings XOXO |
Be ever watchful. Besides all the complications and responsibilities that go along with breeding. Your girl is much to young to have a litter. She is not mentally or physically mature. Here's the heat cycle 1 week coming in - turning pink and swelling 1 week in - showing color/bleeding 1 week going out - When the female will accept a male. When she can concieve. A total of 21 days. However, that is an average and some girls have been known to concieve beyond the 21 days. So, to be safe....it is best to keep the girl away for a whole month..... |
I would treat it as if she is pregnant. I don't feel a typical 17 yr old is responsible enough to care for a puppy in heat and an yorkie male with an desire to have sex that can get to her maintaining his fertility. They will climb walls and move mountains to have sex. Typical teens (outside of extreme cases) don't understand it. It's too much for them. NO knock on your daughter, I wouldn't allow my own at that age. Some swell after heat. No two are alike. Not all vulvas swell huge. Some swell some. I would not wait long to have her spayed. She is much too young to be a mom. You were going to spay here anyway, it's safe to go forward with the spay. Talk to your vet about the details. See if he will proceed with a spay right after her heat is over. Not after you stop seeing blood, but the heat cycle. Just to be clear. |

Thank you everyone for the great advice. She IS way to young to have puppies and that really scares me. I have not only put diapers on her but now he wears one too...and on top of that she is either w/ me or in the pen ... If she isn't in the pen now Dallas is in the pen. If anything happened to her I would be devastated !! I read on here that it's pretty difficult for a dog to get pregnant and that they cry when they are locked..is that true? Also someone replied saying they could still spay her if she is pg ..is that true? That sounds awful !!! |

Yes, you can have her spayed when she is pregnant. Maybe awful, but think of the alternative, if a yorkie female is in the hands of inexperienced breeder......that could cause 'her' life to be lost. |
Mardelin , thanks for the advice...and the correct term...giggle ...as you can see I have no clue nor do I choose to know the terms of breeding a dog. I just want to love my babies. So can you tell me this..is there anything to look for to see if she is pregnant? Any true signs other then a vet visit? Thanks again for your help..I love love this website! |

A diaper won't prevent pregnancy. |
Goodness gracious soo much to know. She got sick for no reason this morning. She started to lick herself on June 12th and thats when we noticed the bleeding , Dallas didn't want anything to do with her until last week and thats when we really started to separate them so this Sat would put her at three weeks ...if she is pg would she have morning sickness already ? |

Just to comment about what I said about a 17 yr old. I would not allow my bitch in heat to be left alone with anyone even adults if there was an dog around. Nobody outside of my dog world. After 16 days it's most likely too late. Have her spayed. She must develop into an adult over time. |
