Expert Advice needed-Urgent

Im not sure if im posting in the correct place but i am desperate.
My 21 days old puppies were dewormed yesterday by the vet. I dont know how necessary it was but i trust my vet and he says its rutine for our country (Dom. Rep). That occured at 3 pm yesterday afternoon. I arrived from work at 5pm and all three puppies looked great, full tummies. At around 9pm my biggest puppy was crying, disoriented, his hind legs seemed paralized and his jaw was shut tight. Also his head would turn to one side and also his eyes. I called my vet and we met at the clinic. He pressumed hypoglycemic attack and proceeded to inject the puppy i think with dextrose and amino acids. We stayed for about an hour and puppy showed slight progress. I was given esbilac to feed this puppy through out the night. At about 4am the girl puppy started to show the same symptoms, i gave her some nutri drops and called the vet. This morning vet visited my home and injected both hypoglicemic puppies and also injected some liquid in order to keep them from dehydrating. I have to make sure they eat.

I apologize for the long post and i hope i make sense. It is now 12:30pm and girl puppy has gotten succion back, the other puppy succioned for a while but slowly lost strengh. He does look better. Vet will home visit again this afternoon

can anyone tell me what they think happened and what i can do in order to save my puppies. Only one puppy is nursing normal at this point. I was so happy i made it to three weeks and now this. please help me

First of all I don't know what deworming med your vet used. However, a hyperglycemic attack could very well have been brought on by the type product used......causing stress, throwing the pup into a hyperglycemic attack. Not saying this is the case, but it sounds like it with both puppies going down.

I'm surprised your vet administered deworming meds without taking a fecal from mom and pups.

By the way, just some advice. Goat's Milk is the closets thing to mother's milk. Esbilac has mineral traces and can cause shunt.

You will have to be ever so watchful with these two, any changes may cause an episode....so watch when vaccines are administered, take precautions. Yes, there is vaccinosis.....where pups can be lost.

Continue with the NutriDrops and try the calf liver recipe posted as a sticky in this section.....Fading Puppy Recipe.

 All the more reason to NOT inject chemicals, unless needed!

Hope they start doing better

So glad someone replied (thank you) you know i thought the same thing about the attack being caused by the deworming meds. First id like to know if the symptoms i described sound like a hypoglycemic attack? The vet administered Panacur.

Yes Mom is still nursing and has lots of milk. We think they might have missed a meal yesterday. I wasnt home but i have someone caring for the puppies and Belle while I am at work.

Oh no, so what he injected can actually make it worse? I thought i was suppossed to follow doctors advice, he has so much experience with yorkies and specializes in reproduction.

I dont know what to do, I cant give up on these puppies.

Don't give up just keep doing what you can to keep their sugar levels up. I am praying for them.

awww.. didn't mean too but they are in my prayers. You are doing a good job just hang in there.

chachi 06-26-2010 10:56 AM

Do you know how to tube feed. If they wont nurse it may be the only way to save them. You are getting good advice best wishes

WV~Yorkies 06-26-2010 05:28 PM

How are they? I have been thinking of you and them all day.

cuculinda 06-26-2010 05:58 PM

Melissa, i have been meaning to update but i didnt want to jinx it;)
Puppies are doing soooo much better ,slowly but surely getting back to normal and starting to stand on all fours again:)
I think i will ¨sleep¨more at ease tonight. I also cannot complain about my vet because he has gone beyond his call of duty to help me raise this litter.

You know i was going to post on the ¨when is it too early to deworm¨and twice i lost my post!! i took that as a sign to stay out of it but i really hope anyone new to breeding reads this thread and get a little idea of what could happen.

Good Night and lets keep praying just in case
