Singleton Puppy I have never had a single puppy before. I have a single that is just 5 days younger than a litter of 4. The litter seems way more advanced in getting around and are starting to play with each other. the single puppy is really getting fat so I think he needs more exercise. I have been putting him, in with the other litter for short periods of time but he goes off alone and sleeps. I'm also trying to shorten the amount of time that mom spends with him so he doesn't eat so much. She is very devoted to him and wants to be with him most of the time. the other mother goes in and feeds them, then wants back out again. Any suggestions? |

I have only had one single but she was so big she would get stuck on her back and couldn't move...lol She had wrinkles on her legs. After she was about 5 weeks she slimmed down. She was one of my biggest pups but turned out the smallest adult I have had. |
I have had several singleton litters over the years and I have found that they do have a tendency to get to fat and they are slower to start walking because they are over weight. A while back I had a mom have 2 pups and four days later one had a litter of 5 so I let the mom with the litter of two raise one of the pups from the litter of five. In your case, I think you are doing the right thing with just letting the single pup spend some time with the other pups. As the puppy gets a little older you can let him spend more and more time with the other pups. I have noticed with larger litters the pups usually start walking around 3 to 3 1/2 weeks and with small litters or 1 or 2 the pups may not walk well until they are 4 to 5 weeks old. They are all different. |
