Puppy food during pregnancy I just started adding a little puppy food to my girl's regular diet today. she is due in early-mid nov. I am slowly adding just a little at a time and i will build up to all puppy food in her last 2 weeks. well, SHE DOESN'T LIKE IT! She is digging through the kibbles and only eating the adult! What a little stinker! Any suggestions? I don't want to take her completely off her adult food just yet. Just a gradual introduction of the puppy food for now. I've been making her hard boiled eggs and giving her the yolk once a day for about a week now. i've given her scrambled eggs, chicken and other things to supplement her throughout the pregnancy but i know she is going to need the puppy food near the end. What if i poured a little chicken broth over the puppy food? Is it okay for her to have broth through out the day (i free feed) or should i limit the amount of it she eats? |
forgot to mention that she also likes neese's liver pudding. do you think its okay for her to have a small slice once a day? or is that too much? |
I have always let my momma dogs eat as much as they want. but they are bigger dogs. I hope someone helps you with this. |
thanks yorkieshadow. you were sweet to reply. however, since i see no one has cared to reply to any of my food questions, i'll just keep doing what i've always done. i was hoping for some input on the the broth and puppy food. i know its okay to give liver, but i wanted to know in what amounts from other's experience. hope you all have a great yorkie day! |
None of our dogs are huge eaters anyways and have never had the need to do anything but free feed. It's a wonderful idea on giving puppy food to the mothers as they need the extra fat from the food for the babies. Don't give any calcium though - until after the puppies are born. Cottage cheese and goats milk are great after. We gave two tablespoons morning and night to add to milk production. Congrates on your upcoming litter! Post photos when you can :D |

i also free feed and thats why i've been having the problem with her not wanting the puppy food i've introduced. she's picking through it. she knows what she likes, lol! again, thanks. |
hi Robbie, congrats on the upcoming litter!!! I've been cautioned by my vet and other breeders (although I dont feed it because I cant stand the smell its a childhood thing) not to feed liver to yorkies, causes a vitamin A toxicity. Change the puppy food you're feeding, many of the pet stores have 1 lbs sample bags, mine love the Royal Canin baby puppy, try that or the puppy! I have had great results with that and Bil-jac. keep us posted |

i'm using pro plan dry now. adult and puppy. i also use can food several times a week mixed in the dry so they will still eat it too. i had thought about changing her food and see what happens, guess i have been in the habit of one, since they all like the adult. she is just really surprising me with her picky ways these days...usually she isnt like this. she turned down a scrambled egg tonight. now that's odd. |
Robbie I dont like using wet food I have on occasion but very rarely, hard food is always better for the stool and for the teeth! I will mix in about 3-4 times a week scrambled eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese but I stay way from the wet canned food...JMHO |
i know what you are saying... and old habits die hard...lol. but i always keep dry out in their bowls at all times. they eat their dry every day. i just give some canned mixed with the wet some during the week. not every day. i couldn't imagine having puppies totally on wet food. whewwww. i'm talking about my adults with the wet. i guess i watched my grand ma do it for so many years with her poodles then my dad with his dogs... |
i did finally talk to my vet today..she said that liver is ok in small amounts and should be used as a treat only. i got really worried about the liver thing....LOL she did say that beef liver is better than pork liver?? (there goes my babies neese's...ha ha. its pork liver.) as far as chicken broth...she said that it is fine to give too in the right amounts. not too much. but a little is actually good for them according to her. i'm changing puppy foods. not because i have a problem with pro plan. i actually like it. but because my girl has become soooo picky. i picked up a bag of science diet this morning. my good friend who is also a breeder has given me good feedback on it also. so far she has eaten a little. i mixed it with her pro plan to not upset her system and i will continue to do so over the next few days...wish me luck i don't like the idea of changing around food with an expectant mommy, but she hasn't given me much of a choice. she just became sooooooo picky with this pregnancy. guess she is just like the rest of us, lol! i know my eating habits were absolutely crazy when i had my daughter years back. |
