Has anyone ever heard of using the oxitocin nasal spray? It may seem a very odd question... but i rarely ask so i am assuming if anyone in this world have heard of it ... will be a YTalker... I came across this form of Oxytocin researching on a very different subject , which was used as part of a protocol to induce adoptive human mothers to lactate and be able to breast feed... another odd situation on it self but... then came across someone who had no clue i am a dog breeder, but suggested this nasal spray form of oxytocin can be used in dog whelping for the same uses regular oxy shots ... and suggested it was safer because all of the excess rapidly gets discarded unlike regular oxy shots ... Anyways... whoever knows what i am talking about will understand the question... The observation caught my attention as at about 10 years ago i would say i had one of my females in bad "stuck" situation with a pup and an obviously inexperienced emergency vet administered too much Oxy and ended up causing a ruptured uterus and we had to spay her... second litter, had previously delivered 6 pups freely on her own, and this particular time had 5 pups , 4 out and one delayed , the remedy was to perform an emergency spay . As anyone reading can tell i was very upset as it was a championed female i planned to breed one more time ! after that i have my huuuuuge eyes wide oooopen anytime we need to use the oxy !!!! Anyways... i found little about this by "google it" research... not going to be seen my vet soon so i thought i would ask it here ! The brand comercial name of this form of oxytocin here in america is Syntocinon® Any inputs will be appreciated ! |
i have no idea...but it will be interesting to see what others have to say. |
I agree I would love to know more about this. |

Never heard of it. I can very well understand your reluctance in having a POP shot. Oxy, is very dangerous when in the hands of one that is not familiar and takes the precautions when using. Correct dosage is very important; most vets use 1/2 cc. However, my vet recommends 1/4 cc and only after the first pup has been whelped. I did have an emergency delivery, somewhat like yours, pup coming hind legs first; chin stuck on his mother's pelvis. However, the vet administered a POP shot, with no results. He then attached a tube to a very huge syringe that was loaded up with Sterile lubrication. Inserted the tube into my girl and shot the gel into her....pup slid out like a cube of butter. But, I will ask my vet about it and see what he says. Although, I think you'd have less control over the dosage. |

How Oxytocin Is Supplied Oxytocin is typically available in injectable form and comes in 20 units/ml bottles. It is also available in 10 units/ml ampules and multi-dose vials. Oxytocin is also available as a 40 units/ml nasal spray. This form of oxytocin is not for use to stimulate uterine contractions and should not be used for that purpose. |

I thought that if anyone here ever had it prescribed or ever used could share. I know of many Meds that are recommended to one use but it gets used anyways, even prescribed by vets. Same happens to human meds as well. I am still hoping if anyone ever used or heard may share it here ... I am very curious ! XOXO |
I just found a site that states that the Syntocinon nasal spray is used in labour (for the same reason as the injection) with humans. They don't mention dogs though. Here is the link: Syntocinon® - Oxytocin | Buy Syntocinon Nasal Spray This site explains why oxytocin is used and when, but they also make the point that the nasal spray shouldn't be used for this purpose: Oxytocin and Dogs - Chinaroad Lowchens of Australia There is also some interesting uses of oxytocin (also known as the love hormone) to help animals overcome shyness, to aid in social development of autistic people and to make men more sensitive! :p |
