loss of baby at birth Hi, yesterday my 7 year old yorkie had her second litter she had 4 pups and one was born dead or died while it was having birth. Is this normal? Her first litter she had 2 pups and one was dead also. What could be happening that not all puppies come out healthy? With the litter she had yesterday mom tried to go in and help because she was sitting on one puppy but Candy was to aggressive so my mom tried covering her eyes so I also think she could have had a mis carrige or something I have lots of questions on this so if someone could help me please. Thanks |
It could be the one that died was just too small and undeveloped. |
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that she lost a pup. Sometimes that's just God's way. Maybe the baby had something wrong with it. Your girl is kinda old to be breeding and that might have contributed to it this time. I think most stop breeding their girls at 5 yrs old. So sad for you and your girl. |
I am sorry you lost a puppy. Is 7 years old to old to be breeding? |
7 years old is way too old for a female to be bred. When you breed a dog that old, you can expect any range of health issues and complications with the pregnancy/whelp/birth. That being that case, what you have described is not that shocking. |
The baby actually looked really healthy even healthier than the others, wellThanks for letting me know, i thought it was ok since last year was the first time we ever bred her. Thanks for letting me know i think then its time to spay her. |

Breeding a girl for the first time at the age of 6 is putting your girl in jeaporady. You breed after the 2nd heat or at 18 months of age (very dependent on maturity level of your girl). However, you never breed a girl for the first time after the age of 3. You are asking for trouble. Their breeding career should end after the age of 5. As each girl gets older you may encounter more medical problems. |
Thanks for the info I wasn't really aware of this and besides vets here where i live never mentioned this. Her first pup of last years litter was in excellent condition and now its perfectly fine and healthy. Her three baby pups which we're born yesterday look all very healthy and alert and Candy is also fine, the only thing that i was worried about was her bad temper she showed yesterday. |
You've been given very good advice. I'm glad you've decided to spay her. |

What do you mean bad temper? How did she act? Was it to the babies? |
No, my mom tried to help her because one baby was attached too long of the umbilical cord and Candy wouldn't let her get in. I have another question if you could help me. Should i be concerned if Candy is kinda like on top of a baby or does she know what she is doing? I get scared that she might suffocate or squish a baby. |

another puppy just died, why is this happening?? |
It is a very difficult question to answer..there could be many reasons for the loss of a puppy. It could have had an unseen health problem, too cold, not eating, infection, bacterial..on and on... Your bitch is a bit past breeding age...and her advanced age can lead to problems with pups and the bitch herself..watch for post whelping infection, take her temp twice a day...make sure she eats. Wishing you luck and all turns out well for the mom and remaining pups. |
How's your girl and her litter doing today? |
