When is heat cycle after litter? Hi guys, I have been asking around and get so many different answers so I thought I would ask you guys since everytime I do I get the right answer! The heat cycle of a female that has had a litter, I was told 2 different things, the heat cycle remains the same before the litter, having the litter does not change the cycle? I was also told that the heat cycle begins counting 6 months after the birth? I understand that some females only have a heat cycle once a year and some every 6 months. I also know that some dont have a cycle till they are 18 months old or not at all. So my question to you the pros- how do you determine the next heat cycle of a female after she has had a litter, do you go by her last cycle or count from the birth forward?????? Any help would be appreciated. |
All females are different but most females will develop a pattern. The majority of my females have always come in heat every 6 to 9 months. If your female has a litter of pups that should not effect her next heat. Always count the months from her last heat cycle, not from when she had pups. I have had some females that would come in every 6 month like clockwork and others every 7 to 9 months. In my 13 years of raising yorkies I have never had a female go longer than 10 month before having her first heat cycle or longer than 10 months between heats but there are exceptions. |
You count from the time of the heat cycle, not whelping...and as psoted, all are different...a regular 6 month bitch will come into another heat just 4 months after whelping...if she goes 8 months between a cycle, then it will be 6 months after whelping and so forth... |

EXACTLY what I have experienced as well. |
You guys are the bomb, I knew I could get a straight answer here. Of course if that is correct then I will have 2 females coming into heat around the same time. That is going to be fun. Wish me luck! My females get along great and have not been ina fight yet. Course one has had a litter before and the other one is not 1 year yet, she has not shown any signs of heat, I wont let her mate till she is at least 1 1/2 years old, so she has a while before she can mate. I will keep her separated when she goes into heat, she is 9 months old and has not shown any interest at all to breed yet. the other one is a different story. |
