new breeder, question about cutting the tale how many inches? hi i`m a new breeder and today I took my puppies to the vet to cut the tails. but he did not have any clue what i was talking when i mention medium length or akc standar he sad I need to know how many inches I want to cut can somebody tell me how many inches is long enough ? thanks |
That's scary that your vet doesn't know.... turn the puppy over and dock about 1/4-1/2 towards the tip of the tail from where the brown starts. I hope that makes sense.... let me try again, flip over your puppy and you will see where the brown starts, add a quarter to a half inch from that spot and dock. At least that's where I do it. Better to be a little long than too short. |

Personally, I have my vet dock at about 1/4" into the black. I get consistently good results giving him that instruction. When I say 'into the black', I mean that the cut is made about 1/4" into the black as measured from the end of the brown on the underside of the tail. |

Hmmm...I can't decide which is more disturbing. Your vet not knowing, or you not knowing even though you are breeding. :eek: This sounds like a good issue to turn to your mentor for assistance with. ;) That is what they are there for. |
It is not scarey to me your vet is not in the business of cutting tails at the right length. His/Her business is to cut them without Health problems. I am not a a show breeder. But My advisement would be 1/4 above the brown. No matter, just that measurement. Above all 3 to 5 days after birth. |

Everyone wants one that is healthy yorkie, socialized & pretty. Isn't it important in breeding to achieve this the best you can? Their not a show dog? Well, it's all important. Just because they aren't being shown doesn't mean we ever take short cuts. It should always be done to improve. It makes you feel good. people can't wait until after the fact to learn. Need to know what to do before. It's a learning process. A tail that is cut too short changes the whole outline of the breed. It's a big deal to me. Pets live a long time. Ask anyone if they have a tail too short. One of the nubs. Not what you want. Too long is bad too. I'm sure you're aware. It's rotten you went in willy nilly. We go countless years and still have mentors. It's unthinkable to me. |
thank you everyone well ,my "mentor" said she will help ( when i got my dog) know she refuses. I ask because I do want to do things right way .Also the breeder of my dog cut it way to short . So I will try another vet tomorrow and tell them to cut 1/4inch after the brown ends. thank you all |
