Pups are fussy Today, day 3 we have fussy pups. We had some crying last night and this morning. She has milk, they are warm, she (mom) was shaking this morning, now thats over, what could it be? |

She's cleaning them very often, all are gaining weight, maybe gas? Take temp? Isn't a thermoeter too big, argh.... Too much milk problem. Top two teets are hard, along with bottom two. I'm trying warm compresses. |

No the thermometer isn't to big. digital thermometer, slathered with KY . |
Was there yesterday, he suggested expressing some milk and warm cloth and to keep and eye on it. Another thing, she's nesting like a nut today, out of the box? |

mine also My momma had hard teats also. Warm compresses helped. Also I put the fattest one on them so they could empty it. When mom starting digging out of box I just stopped her. One of my puppies was up all night crying and after 5 hours I rubbed her belly til she fell asleep. Hope some of this helps.. Mine are 15 days today so I can tell you with a fresh memory what we all went through..:) Hopefully some of it will help out. |
. Yes, I agree. My Momma did not have a temp so I thought she was ok. After her not really eating and looking exhausted almost a week later I took her to Vet. Still no temp but she had a BAD Uterine infection. My vet did not give her the clean out shot either. We did get an xray to see if any pups were left. That didnt show placenta left inside or remains of the dead puppy. Her discharge is very important. Let the Vet check her out. Insist if you have to since he is not alarmed because of her normal temp. Quote:

. I did it 3xs a day for a good 10min. I also tried mushing it around to help loosen the hardness. Squeeze out some milk and make sure it is white. Quote:

JMO, your momma need to be on amoxicillin. Anytime I have a momma get hard teats I put her on amoxicillin and by the next day they return to normal. It does not sound to me like your vet knows much about how to care for your momma. Are you giving the momma a calcium supplement? The shaking could be due to low calcium and the onset of eclampsia. Her higher temperature could also be a indication of low calcium. I have heard that a cabbage compress helps reduce the hardness of the teats also. |
Agreeing with Mary. If she has mastitis the milk is bad and you need to see a vet. Are the teats reddish and very warm along with firmness? Some bloody discharge is normal after whelping but any off color is not normal. With an elevated temp, hard nipples, fussy pups and discharge I would be on my way to see the vet and insist on more testing or antibiotics for sure. Have the pups tails been docked? Could be a fussy reason too...seem the right age for it....too many variables and too much at risk...VET TIME....IMO.. |

Do you have a heating pad or heat lamp on the pups and mom? |

Thinking maybe it is too hot maybe? Moms temp being higher and fussy pups could be that they are too hot. Is it the kennel kind with the temp regulator? I had a fussy litter and panting mom once and could not figure it out. After 2 vet visit (where pups and mom got better at the vets..just like my skinkids did) I figured it out. I had it too hot in there. But not alway the case.. Your mom was shaking, panting, nipples hard, and fussy pups. If after vet says all is well, do a process of elimination and try turning down the heat, keep massaging and manually expressing a little milk 3 times a day and use warm compresses, weigh babies daily. Keep up the good work but do not let your guard down for even a minute cause moms and pups fail rapidly and without warning sometimes. |

Yeahhhh! Temp down to 101.6 |
Awesome!! Now are the pups less fussy? |
Yes they are. I think now she is the backwards dog, yesterday she starrted seriously nesting. Crazy digging, on bed, under bed, DH laundry on floor, didn't do it before babies, weird huh! |

Oh for gosh sake, I hate to be an alarmist when it comes to to vet. Believe me I know you are the expert, but today temp 101.8, teets not warm anymore and much more plyable, she's ate twice this morning, finally snuck some pumpkin in her food for loose stools, she's active, and still has a mild discharge (normal looking, no funny colors). Do you really think she has a problem? She didn't really nest until the day she had the pups, her temp never changed, only sign of labor was panting, and a slight wimper...it's her first litter. Her last heat was a false pregnancy. |

digging and nesting mom "No heat pad last night, room warm and they were between Husband and I (added warmth). Pups on average have gained about 2 oz since birth." If the mom and pups are in bed with you.? .it could be that she is upset or too warm, and is getting agitated because of this. My moms like me to be with them and handle their babies, but some are more nervous about their babies and when they have newborns need their own bed. Digging after birth is an indication that the mom is upset or sick. If her temp is down and you dont feel it is medical, you might want to look at where she is sleeping. A quiet, darker place will help her settle down. |
