help! possible dried up milk? Hi, My yorkie has a two week and three day y/o puppy. Last night the puppy started crying a lot and it has continued today. All the teets have been dried up on the mom except the back 2 and yesterday I noticed the skin on the back two is starting to look dry and kind of wrinkled. The mom hasn't been trying to breastfeed much lately and when I put her in the box and put the puppy up to her teet (after about 4 hours of no feeding and intermittent crying from the baby) I noticed that the baby went frantically from nipple to nipple and it didn't seem like she was getting much, if anything. The mom just got up and walked away after a couple minutes Could the milk be drying up? I sent my husband out to get formula just in case. I don't know what to do. The puppy is chunky and seems healthy but I am worried about dehydration. If I do need to bottle feed, how much and how often? Thanks in advance. All of your help has been a lifesaver throughout the pregnancy and birth. |
Maybe it would be a good idea to post this over in the breeding section, too. |
One puppy doesn't nurse off much milk...I would encourage mom to lay still and allow puppy to nurse a bit longer...if the puppy is gaining and not crying, I would say all is well..another week and you can put it to the dish to lap milk. |
