Pig Rail Questions????? Hey Guys I'm considering that I need a pig rail in my whelping box and I need to get DH working on it, we've looked at some designs, but he keeps asking how high to make it. Can anyone help? Any construction tips. It's going in a under the bed plastic storage bin, 33 1/2 x 15 x 6" high , and Shayna is a larger yorkie started at 10 lbs (now 12.25. Thanks |
I have never found them needed..my pups do not want to get away from mom...and mine have never been ones to lay on puppies...I use a thinner bedding pad and if mom lays on one, they move very fast..they can feel them..and puppies yell. Most active, healthy puppies are ablr to crawl from under mom's leg or shoulder..BUT they might make some breeders feel safer... Personally, I think the type bedding in the box you use is the biggest culpit. I know several breeders who use carpet squares so the pups can get good traction...I used it with a mom who kept balling the pads up and tryiong to bury her litter..stopped that asap with a carpet sq. I removed it at 3 weeks before they started peeing on it... |
I agree with Pat, I have never had a need for pig rails. You do not need a lot of bedding. I use bottomless whelping boxes that my husband build so I just sit the whelping box on top of the bedding so the pups can't get lost in the bedding. |
That is a great idea for a whelping box... |
I have never had a problem but am here 24/7 with my pups. |
