Help estimating how far along she is Hi, I have a pregnant yorkie and I'm not exactly sure of how far along she is. I have absolutely no breeding experience, nor did I want any. I planned to get my yorkie spayed a few months ago but my husband unexpectedly lost his job. I am not working because I'm in nursing school full-time and we couldn't afford it. So, we tried to keep my yorkie separated from the our male toy poodle (an adorable stray we adopted a few years ago). Unfortunately, they "tied" together at least once on the 18th of March. I am worried that they may have mated earlier than that, before we knew she was in heat. From reading online, I see that I could get an x-ray from the vet that could help us estimate how far along she is somewhat. However, given our pathetic monetary situation right now, I was thinking it might be better to save money in case of complications. We love our little girl so much and are complete nervous wrecks. Maybe if I could figure out when she might be due, we would feel slightly more in control. She has been pretty sleepy lately. We can see the babies moving inside of her and she hasn't had any milk come out yet. Any help or hints would be greatly appreciated. Here is a link to a picture of her belly: http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...y82/dmpreg.jpg |
so by the 18th she is due around the 19-21st of may if it was sooner then it would be a few days earlier just have to watch her for signs. some ppl check temps but that doesnt always help..mine dont show milk ahead of time..when you see her nesting then its close...digging. panting. and tightening her back end/stomach she is very cute good luck |
Hello, Unfortuately with her on her back it is hard for me to tell. I have a pregnant yorkie that tied on March 20th. If you look at my pics you can see her belly and how far it sticks out. If you are seeing the puppies move it is getting close. I am no breeder but i have learned a lot from this site and lots of research. If you read my blogs you will find helpful information to prepare for whelping and all. You will have people who are upset you mixed your yorkie but they are still helpful in preparing you. I have had a complication with my babys pregnancy so she has had 2 ultrasounds already. just make sure she doesnt have any bleeding or foul discharge. Give her boiled chicken and cottage cheese for calcium asap.. did you switch her over to puppy food yet? Good Luck:) Quote:

Thanks, guys. |
Hello & welcome to YT. I agree with tammy8833 on the approximate due date and about seeing or feeling movement is a sign that she is not to far from whelping. If I remember correctly, I saw/felt movement on my pregnant female about 10-14 days before she whelped........closer to 10 days I think. I don't know what the cost of an x-ray is where you live, but would think about getting one done. Not only do they give you a pretty good count of how many pups to expect (so you know when she is done), but also the vet will be able to tell by the size of the skulls whether or not she will be able to pass them okay through her pelvic area. I've had 3 litters so far, a litter of 4, a singleton, and just recently a litter of 3. The x-ray showed that the singleton was a large puppy and the skull/pelvic ratio was very close. Knowing that ahead of time I was able to prepare myself and my female for the possibility of a difficult whelp. Thankfully, she had him with very little difficulty. Good luck to you and keep us posted. |
Go to your vet and get as much advice you can get on whelping. Set up an xray around day 55. Then get online and read as much as you can. If you have questions ask..sometimes you might not like the answers but let it roll off your back. Your girl is more important now. I hope everything goes text book for you. Not to be mean but whelping a litter and raising it can run into the 1000's. My last girl whelped 2 nautral and had a have a csection to get the last one out.. just with that alone I met my 1000 dollars. Make sure you have an emergency fund. Alot of vets will turn you out the door if you can't pay. Some doesn't care they want the money then treat. I think it is terrible but just how it is. Next time if you can't afford to spay her. Make sure she is a crate all the time unless you are with her without the males around. It only takes a few seconds and they can tie. If I could I would send mine away for a few weeks. I crate them and rotate out durnng the day to give the breaks. During the night all are crated. It might sound cruel but it is how it has to be when in have intact dogs. |
Just want to add that xray would not be saving money. They can give you an idea if she can whelp these pups. A planned csection is alot cheaper than an emergency one at 3 am. JMO |
Thanks. I will try to take her for an x-ray on Friday. |
Actually, I was able to make an appointment for tomorrow before my clinical. Are the x-rays pretty accurate in determining whether or not she will need a c-section? She is very tiny. She was only about 5 lbs before she was pregnant. The toy poodle weighs about 4 lbs. Oh, one other question. Do vets ever let you bring the dog in while she is in labor and have the puppies there? That might be a stupid question but I thought I would ask it here before asking the vet tomorrow. Thanks again for your help. I already feel extremely guilty for allowing her to get pregnant in the first place and will definately get her spayed ASAP. I graduate in a few months and it looks like my husband is close to getting a new job. |
Cheap spay There are places that will help with the cost of spaying, maybe the humane society if you have one in your town? My sister got her female spayed and the humane society helped her with the cost. Also if all goes well you could sell the puppies to help pay for the spay. good luck to you all. keep us informed. please. |
I took my dog to get an x-ray. The x-ray showed two pups. I think the whole trip was very unhelpful. The vet said that "maybe" she will have them naturally or "maybe" she will need an emergency c-section. He also said that she will have her pups "anytime, maybe soon, maybe next week." |
Also, I called an emergency vet to get an estimate and they said about $1500. Should I shop around more, or is this the standard price? I wonder if it wouldn't be better to plan a C-section. |
sounds like you should be having darlings soon |
Xray Well at least you know how many to expect. Thats a relief when she gives birth and your not sure if one is stuck inside. I take mine in for an xray friday. I hope my Vet helps me more then yours did. Im praying not to have a c-section. Keep me updated. Your due date is around Gezells so I will keep you posted. Gezell tied on the 20th of March so we are very close too:) Quote:
