14 month old pupy lactating Help my 14 month old pup is lactating and she wasnt bred!!! What does it mean????? |
Was she in heat recently? If she's not spayed and just went through her heat cycle it could be a false pregnancy (pseudocyesis). Happens sometimes in intact females after their cycle. Can range from just a little bit of lactation that lasts a couple of weeks clear up to a full blown false pregnancy with weight gain, morning sickness, etc. My Soph did this after her last heat, lactated in one of her nipples for a couple of weeks. Vet said it was annoying but not life threatening, just watch for other symptoms. Vet also said she had a little higher risk for pyometria so as soon as DH gets a couple of good commission checks under his belt we'll have her spayed. |
She was in heat back in feburary. And shes lactating from all her nipples |
From what you're describing then, and if you're 100% sure she couldn't have been around a male even for a couple of minutes, then I'd say false pregnancy. Check with your vet to make sure, and if she shows any signs of pain or fever, take her to a vet IMMEDIATELY as this could be pyometria (uterine infection) and is life threatening. My vet did tell me to avoid messing with the nipples as this would make them keep lactating. If she's licking herself a lot, might need to put a shirt or a onesie on her to keep her from licking and stimulating the nipples which would make her keep lactating. It could last several days and could recur after each cycle, so if you're not planning to breed her it could be time to look at spaying. Vets have differing views on whether or not to spay if a female is experiencing false pregnancy. It never hurts to give your vet a call and ask his/her opinion, for your peace of mind if nothing else. |
Thanks Ill do that :) |
