discharge after having puppies
 
Hi Guys!! As you all know I have adopted Disney. She had 1 puppy about 9 weeks ago. She is still having vaginal discharge. I need to know if this is normal and about when can I expect it to stop. I have never and never plan on having puppies and am wondering what is normal and what is not. I tried searching on google but some sites say 1 week, some say 4 and some say 10...I am a little confused and would appreciate and helpful answers I can get.

Congrats. Is the discharge tinged with a bit of blood? Some girls bleed longer than others, I've had girls bleed sometimes up to 12 weeks. However, my advice is to get her to the vet and have her checked out, just to be on the safe side. Better to err on the side of caution. Don't take any chances.

I agree with Mardelin a vet visit is always a good idea, and I'm so glad that Disney found a good home, I've been worried about her.

Thansk for such quick answers. The discharge is not bloody and does not have an odor, so I am thinking it is not an infection. But I will call the vet first thing in the morning. I just didn't know what was normal and about how long it can last for. She only had 1 pup on February 25th and all the literature I read was just confusing.

She is becoming quite the pampered princess!!! She already has clothes and lots of toys and she thinks she belongs on the couch, with a blanket on her (lol). And she is just a doll to have around ( if we could only get the potty training down). She loves to cuddle and be held!!! I lucked out the day Kelly posted her;)

I'm so glad she found you to live out her days as the pampered princess. Having her spayed will certainly help in the potty training.

It sounds like Disney has found a good home with you. Do you have Disney's puppy too since she should still be with her momma. I hope something didn't happen to the little one since they are not still together.

You got some great advice and I think she needs to get to the vet hopefully in the morning. When are you going to spay her?

As soon as she gains a little weight back she will be spayed. We already have an appointment but it isn't until the end of May as I wanted to give her time to adjust and get some weight on. We will just have to see what the vet says tomorrow. He may want to do it asap.

I've had girls spot up to 12 weeks and I've had clear discharge a bit after the spotting has stopped. Is the discharge clear, mucusy, yellow or what? There are so many variables that can happen after a whelp that could be contributing to the discharge, infection, pyometria....better to have a vet see her.

She is not spotting and the discharge is clear.

What you have discribed is pretty normal. But, even though I have a bit of experience with these types of things, at times second guess myself. When I start to do this, the only way I can stop myself is by getting a 2nd opinion from my vet.

Thanks so much Mardelin...I was really worried b/c my sister told me this wasn't normal. so I was really worried. you have helped aleviate my fears. but i will call the dr first thing tomorrow. Thanks a million!!:):)

Hi!! So I got Disney into the vet this morning ( i am soo lucky. he opens at 7:30). He said that this is normal and as it is clear and does not smell she will be fine., but if it persist bring her back in 10 days b/c she should not have the discharge then. Thanks for all of your help:)

So, glad you took her in to calm your nerves as well as seeing to the well being of your little girl. You are just what Disney needs. You are the perfect mommie for this little girl.

I am trying to do everything to make her the best pet she can be. And she has picked up on the spoiling part quickly!!!:D She already knows what HUGE sucker I am for those big brown eyes:aimeeyork

Awww..thanks soo much!! I love seeing these baby pics. I am going to send them to have them printed out at Wal-greens. Yes the checkup went well. Dr. said that if it doesn't stop in 10 days to come back. BTW she is going to be spayed and have dental done on May 24th as of now. He wants her to gain some weight back first :)

what a cute baby disney was!!! and she is a beautiful adult!!! of course kelly you know I LOVE LOVE LOVE the "silver and gold" yorkies...it's amazing how their fur changes! once again thanks, i can't wait to show my mom!!!:D

Yes, it has been my experience that a mother will have vaginal discharge for many weeks after giving birth, up to the time they wean their pups. What you are describing sounds normal.
