Breeders...Help...I'm really concerned!! Zoe is basically done nursing her 4 1/2 week old puppies....no more milk to offer and 2 of the pups won't have anything to do with food....I have tried several different canned puppy foods....baby food....hard food soaked in formula and water....broth in the puppy food as well as formula.....I just forced formula into them with a syringe...needless to say they are not happy with me....and now their pee is bright yellow, really smelly, and only a few drops.....when I gave them broth in canned puppy food they licked it a couple of times and then left it....not nearly what they should have had...now Lizzy my little cleft lip pup will eat herself into a coma....what should I do....I'm really worried about dehydration....I even tried Karo syrup in water and they didn't want anything to do with it....what should I do.....I don't want healthy pups to go down hill . I'm afraid that the pups will associate force feedings with bad feeling about eating..... |

try mixing canned food watered down with some nutrical added to it. You need to get these pups eating/drinking. Try some food on the tip of your finger first. A lot of time they will start to eat this way...they're just unsure of what they don't know. If they still aren't eating, you will have to force feed with a syringe till they get use to the food. Have you consulted your vet? I would and ask advice. |
Milk Try goat's milk. The puppies are at that in between stage. Only some of the grocery stores carry goat's milk, liquid or dry. If you can't find it then get a milk replacer for puppies. A pet store or a vet will carry it. And, YES, nutri-cal is great for puppies. |

I did call my vet today...they didn't seem to worried (I'm not 100% satisfied with the vet I deal with) they just said to force feed with a syringe so they don't get dehydrated...and also if I was really worried then they could try to increase their appetite with some sort of drug but they didn't like to do that on puppies because of the side effects (i'm not going to do that)...so I am going to try the goats milk everyone keeps talking about and i'm going to get some nutra cal...thanks for the advice...i really appreciate it :) |
weaning I am not too concerned either..forgive me, but some pups fight weaning. If they are tiny mice, then I would be on my toes. They need to get really hungry and they will eat anything in the dish. Try not to change foods, pups eat when they are hungry..they eat paper and poop, so believe me they are not gourmets. Does mom allow any nursing at all? Even when the milk is drying up there can be enough to get by on for a pup or two who fight weaning. I give mine goats milk, egg yolk and honey..never had a pup not lap it when they haven't eaten in 4 or 5 hours..and I have never had a healthy, normal size pup suffer any ill effects by going 6 hrs or longer without food..even if they refuse food, most will lap the Goats milk..give them some Nutra Cal. Be careful with the canned, they are going to start with loose stools and that will make them ill. They do not have to eat any wetted dry or canned right now..goats milk is wonderful and they will thrive. Good luck |
