Too young to wean????? Hi all Ive got 5 pups that are 2 weeks 5 days old, mum is small and does not seem to be suckling them that often. Ive checked her and she seems ok. The pups are fat little things, seem to be very forward for their age, eyes all open, standing on all fours very fast at moving around and look healthy pups. I was wanting to introduce them to food... i use Pedigree Puppy Food tin with goats milk mixed into it. I was wanting to start weaning them today. Wat do you think? |
They are still a bit young to be weaned from mom. It's OK to go ahead and introduce them to softened food at this point and they may take a small nibble here and there, but it will not be enough to sustain them at this point. (Most likely, they will just want to roll and play in it at first and make a big ole' mess! :p) 5 pups at that age can take their toll on mom though, so be sure to keep an extra eye on her. Make sure you are supplementing her calcium intake to help her produce the milk the pups need and to avoid some serious complications with eclampsia. |
Two weeks is a bit young. But, with a litter of 5 she may be being rung ragged. Is she getting a minimum of 4 or 5 meals a day, making sure that she is getting plenty of calcium. With a litter of 5 eclampsia is always a danger to mom, so supplementing them may be needed. But, supplementing with Goats Milk and equal parts of distilled water. Remember that a mother's milk only lets down every 2 hours and even though it appears that she is not nursing them she is. Weigh them daily just to keep track that they are gaining. You've stated your puppies are fat and standing now...I don't think you need to worry too much about them. My concern would be with mom at this point. |
It sounds like the pups are doing great. As the pups get older they will not need to nurse as often so that might be all that is going on. I don't usually introduce mine to food until they are closer to 3 1/2 to 4 weeks old. It really depends on the pups, how well they are walking and how much milk the mom has. Once the pups are walking well I like to grind up the dry puppy food until it is real fine like corn meal and I just place a small bowl of that in the pen with the pups along with a small bowl of water. The pups will just lick up the ground up food and the pups will continue to nurse mom and be weaned slowly. |
