Puppy Growth Chart My T.J. is twelve weeks old today. He was weighed last week, week eleven, and weighed 1 lb. 8 oz. Do I understand from this growth chart that he should weigh approximately 3 to 3.5 pounds as an adult? :2omg: If I'm reading this correctly, isn't this awfully small? Those growth charts are incredibgly inaccurate. Although 1.5 pounds at 12 weeks, he is not going to be very big. That is terribly small and he will be delicate. |

The Growth Chart is pretty right on for most breeds. However, in the yorkie world it is not dependable. There are many things to consider. I don't know where you obtained your puppy from or if he is from your breeding? Whether he was line bred and comes from a consistent pedigree. If he does then the breeder can guesstimate, based on the lines his possible size. Another consideration, is yorkies grow at different speeds. But, that said you have to take in to consideration that from time to time an oversized or undersized yorkie will be produced. So, the only thing you can really depend on is "This Breed Will Make A Liar Out Of You." |

Most charts are estimates and are based on the average puppy, since there is no real life "average", every chart has a "margin of error" or standard deviation. My guess is the margin of error is AROUND 1 pound. This means that your puppy could weigh what the chart says plus or minus one pound. This is still just an estimate, because I don't know the true standard deviation, I'm just estimating. One of the problems, is that some breeders sell an 8 week old dog, and SAY it's 12 weeks. |
might not the in the right Thread.... 1 Attachment(s) Odin is now 14 weeks and he weighs about 2kg (4.4lb). The breed is supposed to be around the 7lb mark (more or less) and now i am worried that he will be waaaaay over the breed target. I do not really mind, yet that will limit the (necessary) air-travel. The bigger he is the more expensive the ticket and i travel a lot! (plus he would be put in the cargo if he is bigger than a certain weight) I would go crazy if they did that! I would never take that risk! Its cold and he would be alone, in the dark! I heard they do not do well when separated with the owner and I am worried that he will suffer. Is it a normal weight at that young age? his legs also seem kind of long to me. I am used to big dogs and their growth rate is different. Should I take him to the vet? I think i overfed him (though i only gave him what the pack says(-) some to replace with treat). I give him apple, chicken breast popcorn(home made-1-2 pops), bio calcium bones and 2 other types of snacks, and low cal royal edu kibble. I alternate what i give. I really want him to be my shadow and never leave my side so that is why i was gifted a Yorkie. Now I want more!!!!!! I really love him and would never want to harm him. So again is it normal that he weighs so much at that age? Or is he just a bigger guy and I need to take some kind of measures(travel, kennel, babysitter etc)? Or worse am I harming him by overfeeding? |

In conversations with my mentor, if I even MENTION the phrase,"chart says", she shoots me a look that is capable of flash freezing an Eskimo to 250* below zero in 5.5 seconds......and depending on how her day has gone, she has been known to drop her head, throw her hands in the air and just stomp away! |

The growth chart isnt always accurate. Both of mine outgrew their predicted growth chart weights but some yorkies dont grow as big as the predicted weight. All yorkies grow differently. How big were the parents that can sometimes give a good idea |
I have 3 growth charts which are identical except one chart only goes up to 22 weeks, one 24 weeks and a 3rd 26 weeks. By 22 weeks is it pretty much a done deal the weight they'll arrive to? One chart notes at the bottom that a yorkshire may be off by .5 to 1.5 pounds at the 18 month weight. So are they considered full grown by 18 months and when they say off, does that mean in either direction weighing more or less? That's pretty darn close! |

Some can have a late growth spurt and some may chart heavier as a pup but quit growing and turn out small. I've found, with my dogs at least, that the girls keep filling out up to about 2+ years old. The boys are usually done by about 1 1/2 years. |
