maternal instincts have any of your girls ever mothered each others pups? as in keeping them warm when the mom gets out of the bed and playing with them as they get older? missy and kitty both expect bambi and kuki to pull their weight in the raising of litters - although missy and kitty cant be in the same house as each other as they both are dominant personalities but now have their own packs (both of which include bambi and kuki... long story...) if i keep bambi and kuki away from the litter the mother gets really anxious if she needs to leave them at all. and my girls do have quite big litters, so after they are a day old i just let bam and kuki in the room (the basket sits beside my bed as my girls sleep with me at night) and all is well... my mentor has a mother and daughter who both whelped at the same time (the same time the younger was taken to stud the older got into her male) but the mother actually helped her daughter have, clean and feed the pups! do we just have bazzarly maternal dogs or are all like this? is it just because of a good pack structure? should kitty be as good if kuki had pups or could she try to eliminate the competition? |

No in the situation you described wihere the mother assisted and cleaned the pups....real dangerous....in a situation like that.....I have seen a female kill the pups. I never, never allow another dog into the whelping area.....too many things can go wrong. If you have two females with whelp and one goes into labor it can bring the other one in prematurely, you can loose the litter. Also, some girls will hold back their labor when other dogs are around. The should be kept in a confined area in a quiet area of the house, away from people and animal traffic. |
yea, loads of good points! i dont think she meant them to be in the same room, they just ended up there, and a senior veterinary nurse lives next door to me and when i told her the mother was becoming anxouis and standing by the door crying, she came in as i let bam and kuki in on leads (so it was very controlled) also, i have both gardens fully paved and enclosed (easy to powerhose and dieinfect) and the girls get a very good clean before allowed in the room... i'd never let any of the others in while one was giving birth for everyones safety, and will not let them near the new pups unless the mother shows distress and helen (the nurse) is there... |
