Goat's Milk I have a litter due at the end of April, so am trying to get all my ducks in row and stock up on all my supplies. All the recipes for goat milk puppy formula that I have found (and hopefully, I don't need formula) call for canned goat's milk. I have been through every grocery store in the city and all the Walmarts as well and have not been successful in finding goat's milk in cans. I have found homogenized goat's milk sold in one grocery store. Does it have to be canned or would the grocery store milk work as well. My other question is- does anyone know if the Esbilac goat's milk formula causes the same problems with puppies or is it safe to use. I remember reading the thread about Esbilac but don't know if this included the goat's milk one as well. Thanks, Audrey |
Hi Audrey, I buy my canned goat's milk at Walmart. It is located next to the evaporated milk and the powdered buttermilk on the baking isle. Ask one of the managers to help you find it. I try to always have a few cans on hand -- you just never know when you may need it. You can also purchase human grade powdered goat's milk from ebay and an animal grade from some feed stores. Good luck with your whelping - can't wait to see pics of the new babies. |
Well, you have the opposite problem from me. The only goat's milk I can find is the canned. I would think what you've found (homogenized) would be as good or better. The canned is convenient because you can buy it well in advance and just have on hand. The only thing is you have to shake it really well before opening to get all the milk solids mixed in. Try looking in the baking aisle where the evaporated milk is. I wouldn't trust any Esbilac product after reading the article posted about it. I use the canned, mixed w/ water and add a little karo to it. I've read somewhere (sorry, don't have the link) that a dog's milk has a higher sugar content than goat's milk so that's why I add it in. Thanks, I have had no luck finding either the powdered or the canned at any of our Walmarts or any grocery store. (I am in Canada, we have different products at our Walmart). I guess if I need to I will use the grocery store homogenized. I just don't want to have to be out sneaking through some farmer's barn with a bowl at 3 a.m. looking for a goat to milk (but I will if I have to):) Audrey |
Our Kroger has fresh homogenized goat's milk. I would think that it would be perfectly safe, but I haven't tried it. |
I am seriously thinking about buying a Nanny so that I will have a supply of fresh goat's milk. I figure I could milk her out and freeze it in small portions. |

When I lived in St. Paul, MN. I bought fresh goat milk from a lady who raised goats and also grew organic food for them. I had my youngest son on this milk. It literally saved his life. For my fur girls I give them some of the canned goat milk each time I open it to use on cereal or when I make clam chowder, oyster stew, alfredo sauce, white gravy and such. They love it!! |

You are so resourceful! :) That is why Cerise is such a wonderful baby! And she LOVES goats milk. I had no idea until one day I was eating a bowl of cereal and she smelled it and went nuts. So I gave her a teaspoon of milk and she was so happy. Next was the goat yogurt :) Now I can't eat the yogurt without fixing her some because she will start fussing at me...LOL Thank goodness I don't drink regular cows milk or eat regular yogurt :D |

I actually phoned the vet college at the University of Saskatchewan to see if they had such a thing as a "dog milk bank" for pups that can't nurse or need supplementing. I think they thought I was nuts, but I actually think it would be a good idea, they have milk banks for human babies, why not dogs. It would be a life saver for some of these little ones to have a milk bank and a colostrum bank. Audrey |
