whelping mellow them? I've been told that Yorkies mellow (in behavior, etc) after having puppies/weaning them (not immediately having having them)...has anyone found that to be true? I'm sure it is, as growing up on a ranch...most female animals do mellow significantly after having offspring...just wondering how much that applies to Yorkies and if anyone knows first hand. ~Kendra |
To be honest, I'm not sure that whelping mellows them. I do think that they mellow out a bit as they mature and usually around 2 years old which also happens to coincide with the age a dog might be having their first litter but I think it's more because of their age. |
I think it has to do with the age and temperment also. Tayah is such a laid back girl. She has been this way since she was about 10 months. :) |
Thanks for replying. I was having a conversation with someone about it and told them I'd ask here. I'm sure age has the most to do with mellowing out...just wondering if the giving birth and mellowing out phenomenon held true with Yorkies like other animals. My Yorkies are as different as the kids...Gracie is on the hyper side and Carly (the younger one) is soooo laid back, such a sweet disposition. Two extremes. Thanks ~KC |
I never found a change in personality..but, I will not breed a bitch who is not of ideal temperament...last thing I want is a litter of hyper or shy pups. |
well my Chloe wont be having any litters but I sure hope she mellows with age anyway... :p |
I'm sure environment has something to do with how they behave also. I probably shouldn't have said Gracie was hyper, she's just more 'active' than Carly, and Carly loves everyone, where Gracie initially is more guarded...not that has anything to do with the question. I just thought maybe an experienced breeder here might have noticed a pattern of mellowing - or not - that I could pass on to someone. Maybe any changes are subtle enough no one noticed in their dogs (though I'd think an experienced breeder would be attune to these sorts of things???but maybe not), anyway, I lean with the others that age certainly could be a contributor to "mellowing/emotional maturing" as well has motherhood. ~KC |
My Emilee has had 3 litters and it hasn't mellowed her even a tiny bit...lol. She's spayed now and that didn't help either. She just turned 6 years old so I'm waiting....and waiting...and waiting... :) |
