Puppy Contracts? I am in the process of creating my contracts for the new fur-babies mommies. I would love to get some ideas from you. What do you consider important you add in you contracts? (i.e. spay/neut.) Also, any tips for my "Yorkie Tips" page I will include would be welcome! I will be putting YT's web address for all the new owners to check us out. Thanks |
I think you should write it as you would want to see one if you were the buyer. Consider would you like or think it's ethical to pay for your dog and have someone try to control all aspects of it after it was yours. If potential buyers are screened carefully I would think you wouldn't have to put in every little detail like some I've seen. Most of the contracts I've read wouldn't hold up in court if push came to shove, enforceable contracts can't be one-sided. So I'd suggest just put one together that you'd be comfortable signing and would be able to be legally upheld. |

Joey's breeder had those stipulations as well as the shots he was to receive or not receive. She also specified which anesthesia should be used during surgery. I found this very helpful. |
I'm not a breeder, but when I purchased my Sasha this year, my breeder had an excellent contract. Everything listed above was included, plus she has an area that talks about how I'm not allowed to sell her, turn her over to a shelter, or re-home her without the breeder's express written permission... which I thought was great. You don't want your babies going to someone who's finiky and will try to just re-sell the pup in a month if it doesn't work out! She also gave me a five year health guarantee, so if Sasha contracts a deadly health issue she will either send me a new pup and I send Sasha back, or if I decide to keep her (which of course I would anyway!) she would pay half of the medical costs up to 50% of what I paid for her at the time of purchase. It was about five pages long and covered everything. Being a first time yorkie buyer, I felt very confident and safe about purchasing with these kind of guarantees. |
