9 weeks old.....shot time? I posted this qustion on Diet and Health, but thought might be better here. Cooper and Diva are 9 weeks today. Coop is 1#14oz and Diva is 1#11 oz. Is she big enough? I know to just get the core vaccines, just that she still seems so small.............. Thanks~ Deby |
Thanks so much for the help |
I think I'd do it at 10 weeks in this case, but have zero scientific studies to back up my response. Waiting is fine as long as pup is not exposed to anything. Ellie was vaccinated for the first time at about 7.5 weeks, I think. She was probably just less than 1.8 pounds and did fine (I wasn't there, but no problems were reported to me). I'm sure many Yorkies are vaccinated at that weight without a problem, but of course there are no guarantees and you'll really almost have to do it in the next week or two anyway or pup will be stuck inside for a long time. |
I think they will be fine. I got Angel and Trinity done at 8 weeks old and Angel was about 1lb 9oz or less and they both did great. You aren't getting them lepto are you? Because that might make a difference. Mine don't get it, too risky. Otherwise they shouldn't have any problems. If you are worried about a reaction, give them benadryl before the shot. |
Thanks to both of you! Thank you for responding!!!! No, only doing the core vaccines.... talked to my vet (actually 2 of them) and they also said it should be okay. Just my first litter of puppies and I'm trying so hard to do things right. The breeder I got my male from (not a person I want to learn to do the right things from) wanted to do their shots (she does do them by weight0, but I'm not going to let her. I'm scared the new parents will do the shots over and that is giving them way more than they need. I really wish there was someone in this area I could learn things from that is actually doing it correctly and not for $$$ |
If you mean this person gives less to small dogs than she would big dogs, be very careful with this. I know that many think it doesn't make sense to give teh same amount to both, but it takes a certain amount to get an immune response. It should not be based on size. Now most or all vaccines are probably way more potent than they need to be, but that would apply to large dogs also... |
No way on lepto! I'm not having the breeder give them shots. She does give them smaller shots closer together (more by weight). None of the vets in this are seem to do that, and I'm not willing to take the chance. I do have 2 differant vets that I go to ~one because he had Greyhounds and back 15 years ago when we got into Greyhound resque not many vets knew their anesthesia requirements ~ one that we take the yorkies to because they are more up to date and have a 24 hour emergency service at their office. They both said they thought it was okay even with her small size. How much benadryl to you give them? |
