Our vet advises that for females once they are past their first cycle and for males at 6 months..... i tend to agree but only because i have a great deal of respect for our vet and not really done it any other way.... not sure 8 wks is the way to go but as far as im concerned all opinions matter and each situation and experience is different

There are breeders that spay/nueter prior to placing pups. Pros and cons on having the surgery performed at such a young age.

I prefer waiting until later, after their growth plates have closed, as to not to interfer with their with their growing pattern and maturity developement. In my opinion 8 weeks a bit too young, not willing to take that chance on a wee one.

My vet will not perform a spay/neuter on any dog under 5 months. He also stated that their growth plates are interrupted by this surgery. He had gone to a seminar where they were discussing this since many breeders had been asking so they could sell their pups with them spayed/neutered already. The outcome of the seminar was on larger breeds it may be done safely but on all dogs the growth plates patterns will be interrupted and best for the dog's safety and development to wait. I listen to my vet - he is very good. I do know of other breeders that do spay/neuter early, but I am just not ready to do this knowing I could be harming them. Sure - you can find vets that spay/neuter early, but I will not be using them. As a past vet tech - spaying is not that easy. You have the whole stomach opened.

I agree. I'm a big advocate on spay and neuter however, totally disagreed with the rescue I volunteer with when they did a spay on a 13 week old Yorkie, who I have since adopted. Lilly is now three years old, and weighs just under five pounds. At 13 weeks old she wasn't even two pounds. In my oppinion the risks of spay or neutering at such a young age and small size out weigh the good it will do. Elaine

The shelter I volunteer at spays them young too. When I fostered the 3 month old pom puppy mill puppy I had to get her spayed at 3 months. She did fine but I felt so bad as she was so young. I understand that the shelters do not want to adopt these puppies out unless S/N as no matter how hard you screen some people are going to breed them either by accident or on purpose and they can't hold on to these puppies until they are older, but I would never spay mine that early. Also yorkies are so small at that age.

Yep! Agree. They need to developed. I did my Male Corso at 15 months because they are slow to develop physically. I forget how old the Yorkie was, but she was at least 9 months. It has been almost 13 years, and now I can't even remember what I had for breakfast.

I understand your frustration... but I have to agree with everyone else that this is much too early... I would pass over a puppy who had been altered this early... there are just too many risks to their future health (forgetting about the risks at the time).
