How to become a AKC or CKC Breeder?
 
I am trying to do find out what I need to do to become a breeder?

Are you wanting to breed Yorkies? First, a reputable breeder would not be CKC and thier are some AKC registered breeders that are not good or reputable either. But between the two AKC should be your choice. I would suggest you go to the YTCA website and learn more about the Yorkshire Terrier, and then take plenty of time talking to some of the breeders here on YT about what you need to know. This website is full of GREAT and IMPORTANT information.

Why would a reputable breeder not be CKC? the Canadian Kennel Club?

We have many reputable breeders. Please go to www.ckc.ca to find out what you need to do to become a ckc breeder and to www.akc.org for their requirements.

Yes, I agree, it's really important to understand the breed, and all the health problems associated with the breed. Because of the popularity, breeders have been breeding them for money, not a love of the breed, so this means they have skimped on research and health testing. I do want to warn you that because of the economy, many rescues are having a hard time placing dogs, and many good breeders are cutting back in their breeding programs because they are having a hard time finding suitable homes. Finding a good home for the offspring is a very important responsibly for the breeder, and many breeders are taking a monitory loss to do this. Please don't go into breeding because you want to earn extra money, only if you have a true passion for breeding. Otherwise, you will not want to do all the reading and research that is necessary.

In Texas the have the Canine Kennel Club (BYB fans who put adds in the classifieds)...not the CKC you are talking about. I don't even think they have a website...LOL

Unfortunately, an American company also uses the initials CKC, the Continental Kennel Club, and they are not considered to be a reputable registry, they take the breeders word for what the dog is, and will even register mixes. The reputable Canadian Kennel Club is the Canadian equivalent to the AKC. However, I've read of people in Canada being mislead by seller saying that the dog was CKC registered, and later found out it was the American CKC. Registries

See...I once called someone in an add in the paper (before I found out it was bad news) and they told me it was the Canine Kennel Club! :eek: LOLOLOL!!!! WOW I am so happy I never took them seriously.

There probably is one, the thing most people don't realize is anyone can start a registry. Give me $20.00 and I'll register your dog with the "Elite Princess T-Cup" registry. :D

This is why I posted. Because I am Canadian and don't want the acroymn CKC to be misinterpreted other than the CANADIAN KENNEL CLUB.

I know it's really confusing, and at first the American company got people because of the Canadian Kennel Club's good name, and now people think any CKC initials are bad, we should be careful to remember the distinction.

OK so...
A.K.C. = American Kennel Club
C.K.C.= Canadian Kennel Club or Continental Kennel Club
A.C.A. = American Canine Association
A.P.R.I. = American Pet Registry Inc.
Y.T.C.A. = Yorkshire Terrier Club of America
Have I missed any one?? Wow, I realize some are reputable and some are not. But have we all just sat down and thought...a person off the street looking for a purebred yorkie would read that the pup has papers...well that means they are purebred..right? I got confused just writing them...:confused:

I would say to the OP to do your homework. Like before you buy a car you research, check out the car, look it up on line, check the reviews, ask a mechanic how often they are serviced, etc. So if you do that for a piece of machinery...you better do twice as much before breeding. Because unlike cars the dog you purchase to breed can have lasting effects on the breed itself.
Do your research. Talk to Yorkie owners and breeders. Study the AKC standards and what a great representation of the breed looks like. Learn about all the testing that a breeding dog needs prior to breeding, talk to your vet. Then get a mentor and go from there. You should be breeding to improve your lines, not to try and make money.

UKC = United Kennel Club

I think there is also a CKC = Canine Kennel Club
